Job description:


We're looking for a Collections Officer to deliver the Heritage team vision by increasing access to the collections of the museum, photographic archive and library at AELTC through improved documentation, increasing digitisation and excellent collection care.


This is fixed term maternity cover.

Background:


  • Founded in 1868, The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) is a private members' club which organises and stages The Championships, Wimbledon.
  • The awardwinning Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum is open yearround and welcomes around 100,000 visitors a year, enabling them to engage with the heritage of this prestigious club in the Museum and on the Tour. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and passionate individual to assist our team in developing, caring for and creating access to our unique historic collections, to the highest standard. The Heritage Collections consist of over one million items comprising of museum objects, archives, photographs and books.
  • Our visitors come from all around the world to enjoy Wimbledon yearround in our Museum and on our awardwinning tours of the Grounds. Many discover the magic of Wimbledon as part of our awardwinning learning offer aimed at students of all ages or as part of our community engagement programme.

Main Duties/Responsibilities:


Collection Projects:


  • The Collections Officer will work with other members of the team to identify and prioritise projects to improve documentation, increase digitisation and improve collection care.
  • Develop a strong understanding of Collections Development and specialist knowledge and contacts to advise the Collections Development Group.
  • Assist with the development of policies and procedures in accordance with SPECTRUM standards.
  • Oversee the movement of items from all collections to improved storage spaces and into and out of the collections
  • Work to reduce the cataloguing backlog, reviewing progress on a regular basis.
  • Document new acquisitions and loans and items for disposal
  • Advise and assist the Picture Library Manager with the digitisation, rationalisation, documentation, storage, and organisation of the photographic archive, including the Michael Cole collection.
  • Assist with data cleaning of all types of records on the Vernon Collections Management system and preparation for entry onto Collections online.
  • Help to maintain the integrity of the collections management system (Vernon) and learn about the history of tennis to improve documentation and the CMS

Increasing Access:


  • Coordinate requests for items from all collections for displays
  • Respond to research enquiries and supervise researchers viewing materials and objects from all collections.
  • Help to develop programme and management of students/volunteers on collectionsbased projects

Collection Care:


  • Be able to handle and move all collection items safely, observing best practice.
  • Appropriately label and mark a variety of object types and materials in line with best practice.
  • Identify and repackage/rehouse items as required and rearrange areas of the stores when necessary.
  • Courier loans when required.

Other Duties:


  • This job description provides a guideline only. Your role will evolve and other duties may be required of you in the future, as directed by the Collections Lead or Head of Heritage.

The Championships:


  • Longer hours of work may be required during The Championships.

Person Specification:


_Essential_

  • Very good standard of written and spoken English.
  • Ability to learn and digest information quickly.
  • Confidence when communicating with a wide range of researchers and the general public.
  • Proven track record of documenting and caring for historic collections and working within collections teams.
  • Experience of using collections management software.
  • Experience of working through collection backlogs and associated challenges.
  • Experience of handling, packing, marking, moving, storing and cataloguing collections.

_Desirable_

  • Ability to prioritise different tasks, keep track of projects and report on them.
  • An interest in tennis and tennis history would be an advantage.
  • Excellent timemanagement skills with the ability to work within deadlines.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programmes.
  • Ability to work extended hours, some evenings and weekends as required.
  • Commitment to your own professional development.
