Salary:
£43,414 to £51,805 per annum

The Role


We are seeking a Senior Research Associate with health economics expertise to join the Health Economics Group in the Population Health Sciences Institute.

The post-holder will develop and lead research in the area of economic evaluation and/or outcome valuation. Applicants should have a PhD in Economics or Health Economics or equivalent experience.

Fixed term for two years.


As part of our commitment to career development for research staff, the University has developed 3 levels of research role profiles.

These profiles set out firstly the generic competences and responsibilities expected of role holders at each level and secondly the general qualifications and experiences needed for entry at a particular level.

Key Accountabilities

  • Show academic leadership in health economics in the Health Economic Group and the Population Health Science Institute
  • Develop research proposals and funding bids for prestigious funders (e.g. NIHR, MRC, ESRC), and be successful in obtaining funding
  • Plan and lead high quality research, project managing the research activity, supervising and taking responsibility for the research team. Plan the research to be undertaken, as a selfcontained item or as part of a broader programme
  • Conduct work related to the methodological development, design and conduct of economic evaluation including: costing of interventions; data collection and analysis; Outcome valuation; decision analytic modelling
  • Carry out research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and to an appropriate standard
  • Publish in high quality peer reviewed journals and disseminate findings at conferences nationally and internationally
  • Undertake teaching of health economics on the Institute and Faculty of Medical Science postgraduate and undergraduate courses as required
  • Collect and organise data; ensure that research activity and data is consistent with current research governance instructions and Data Protection legislation; ensure that research activity and data collection and management meet the demands of new instructions and legislation as these come into effect and keep appropriate records
  • Identify and undertake a programme of professional development, including further training in research methods and other transferable skills
  • To contribute to the activities of the Health Economics Group at Newcastle University
  • Carry out administrative tasks and other duties to support the Population Health Sciences Institute as required by the Dean
The Person

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Significant experience of conducting research in the areas of economic evaluation, and/or outcome valuation
  • Ability to work independently and as part of the research project team
  • Ability to prioritise key tasks
  • Demonstrable ability to work in a range of education settings and situations
  • Ability to carry out research project work within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and producing research to an appropriate standard
  • Excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work flexibly and cooperatively with others
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect research/personal data according to protocols and principles of good research practice
  • Ability to prepare reports and papers for presentation at national and international conferences and meetings
  • Experience of preparing research proposals for submission to competitive funding organisations (e.g. NIHR, research councils)
  • Evidence of ability to write for high quality peer reviewed publications with a publication record at a national level
  • Evidence of skills in using relevant statistical and economic modelling packages and the ability to undertake modelling of study data
Desirable

  • Experience of research on methodological aspects of economic evaluation
  • Experience of supervising less experienced staff and postgraduate students
  • Teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level in an academic setting
