Our client De Montfort University are currently recruiting a Senior Communications Officer


Expected start date:
As soon as possible


Expected end date: 19/02/2024

Expected interview date:

This role is a Hybrid based role working on campus 2-3 days per week


Working following hours:
37 hours per week


Duties and responsibilities

  • Manage the development and delivery of the university's engagement communications strategies with a particular focus on supporting the university's strategic ambitions.
  • Play a key role in coordinating and ensuring a highly professional, innovative and effective approach to communications.
  • Provide engagement support across all available communications channels (internal, social media, external) as required to meet the university's strategic needs.
  • Bring project management approaches to communications planning, considering university, directorate and team priorities, stakeholder engagement, available resources and realistic timescales.
  • Produce detailed communications plans, including timelines, and ensure delivery against stated objectives.
  • Produce reports on delivery for senior stakeholders against stated objectives and agreed priorities.
  • Develop and oversee procedures and processes to ensure smooth and effective operations, both within the communications team and in its relations with the wider directorate and the university as a whole.
Deliver team-wide plans which reflect directorate and university priorities.

  • Help manage and oversee the business partnering approach of the
communications team to support effective planning across the team.

  • Work collaboratively with staff in the directorate and across the university to
source, commission and/or produce high-quality content (including words,
images, video and social media) as required for use across all media platforms
and channels.

  • Manage a team of Communications Officers, ensuring they produce high quality
content for all audiences as required for use across all media platforms
and channels.

  • Routinely and robustly challenge facts and figures established convention and
current university messaging to ensure all communications are up to date,
accurate and legally compliant. This will include taking a 'critical friend'
approach to all communications planning and university meetings.

  • Ensure that DMU's 'voices' are shaped for particular stakeholders and that
communications are concise, clear, consistent and coherent; effective in
delivering the required communications aims, in line with DMU's in-house style
guide and compliant with the Consumer Rights Act.

  • Be an ambassador for the directorate in all activities undertaken.
  • Recognise which issues need to be escalated to the Head of Engagement
Communications or Associate Director of Communications.

  • Be prepared to work unsociable hours (evenings and weekends) on occasion
as required, including playing a part on the out-of-hours social media duty rota
and working at university Open Days.

  • Promote and exhibit DMU values and be a role model for the university's code of
conduct.

  • Perform any other duties commensurate with the job grade as reasonably
required from time to time.

  • Treat all DMU staff, students, contractors and visitors with dignity and respect.

Skills and experience
Understanding of internal and external audiences and innovative ways to engage with them.

Experience of creating and implementing effective communications plans while considering organisational and team priorities, stakeholder engagement, available resources and realistic timescales

Extensive experience of corporate copywriting such as speeches, brochure, web and social media content.

Extensive knowledge of social media including Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.

Ability to routinely and robustly challenge facts and figures.

Ability to use metrics and rep
