About us

Surrey County Council is embarking on an exciting and transformative journey to become a leading-edge authority, putting Surrey's people and places at the heart of everything we do.

By 2030 we want Surrey to be a uniquely special place where everyone has a great start to life, people live healthy and fulfilling lives, are enabled to achieve their full potential and contribute to their community, and no one is left behind.

Surrey is a diverse county with urban fringe in the north abutting Greater London and towns and villages to the south.

It is situated between Heathrow and Gatwick airports and hosts highway networks and rail infrastructure which connect the county to London and the south coast.

The county is recognised as a powerhouse of the British economy and provides the largest net contribution to the UK Government after London.

It is also the most wooded county in England, some 25% of it is covered by the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and about 73% of it is designated Metropolitan Green Belt.

Consequently, Surrey faces huge challenges to accommodate housing and economic growth in a sustainable way in the context of a changing climate, biodiversity loss, a densely populated and valuable natural environment, sustainable waste management, maintaining the supply of and safeguarding a range of minerals, and identified deficits in supporting strategic and local infrastructure.

In this regard the county council is a key infrastructure provider and has a statutory responsibility to engage with Surrey's districts and boroughs and surrounding planning authorities in plan making and provide for minerals and waste management development across the county.

About you

As a member of the Minerals and Waste Planning Policy Team, you will play an important role supporting the work of the team.

This includes the preparation of the county's first joint minerals and waste local plan and related public consultation and engagement exercises, as well as monitoring the performance of the county's existing minerals and waste development framework.

We are looking for someone who has a keen interest in land-use planning matters, is self-motivated and highly organised, confident, and able to manage a varied workload effectively and independently.

Working closely with professional planning officers, you will provide ICT support as required including web authoring, accessibility, and advice on the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other specialist computer systems and databases including GIS.

You should be self-confident and will value working as part of an experienced and supportive team. You should be able to work under pressure, to deadlines, communicate effectively, and demonstrate drive and commitment. We will support and develop you to help you reach your own ambitions.

  • A good general education and knowledge of landuse planning in England or related disciplines,
  • Minimum 5 GCSEs at Grade C and above including English and Mathematics, or able to evidence to an equivalent level,
  • Good written and oral communication skills,
  • Good ICT skills including database management.

At Surrey, our values and behaviours are just as important as our skills and abilities. They shape who we are as an organisation. Find out more about the values
we follow.
