Job Introduction

We have an excellent opportunity for someone with experience and specialist knowledge of animal health and welfare to join our busy professional Trading Standards and Environmental Compliance team.

Solihull's motto is 'urbs in rure' (_town in the country_), not only reflecting that we are a socially and economically diverse borough but that almost two thirds of it is designated as green belt, a large proportion of this is worked farmland.

As our Senior Animal Health Officer, this will therefore largely involve you working in an agricultural environment with farmed animals.

You will be responsible for animal health and welfare compliance, carrying out inspections and investigations, ensuring disease control mechanisms are in place, and will lead on outbreak and contingency planning.

We pride ourselves on being a Council that is small enough to care, but big enough to make a difference and as Senior Animal Health Officer you will make a difference.

Working closely and building relationships with the farming community, businesses and partner agencies you will be proactive in seeking solutions and providing advice to improve and make a difference to the health and welfare of animals and livestock across Solihull.

To be successful in this role, knowledge and experience in the field of animal health and welfare is essential.

You will have experience of providing advice and guidance on regulatory and enforcement issues as well as proven knowledge of relevant legal processes.

You will be able to conduct practical inspections and investigations with effective evidence gathering. You will also be confident in dealing with situations involving conflict, able to solve problems and make sound judgements.

The job will require you to work outdoors, in unpleasant environments and in all weathers. To meet the requirements of the role you may also be required to work evening and occasional weekends.

Applicants must also be able to drive, have a driving licence and be a car owner, however for disabled applicants, reasonable adjustments will be made where required.

We know that our employees want to do more than just work, and so we encourage good work-life balance by offering a range of flexible working options; this is further supplemented by an extensive wellbeing offer, as well as a range of other benefits including staff discounts and access to the Local Government Pension Scheme.

We are also able to offer a range of training and development opportunities and, where appropriate, would support you to undertake the Chartered Trading Standards Institute Health & Welfare Professional qualification.
