The products offered by Atradius protect companies around the world against the default risks associated with selling goods and services on credit.

Within the Special Products Unit we have a vacancy for a Commercial Underwriter based in London.


The purpose of the role is to strategically grow our Special Products book, predominantly through our broker community whom are mainly based in London and the wider UK, whilst providing the highest standard of service and expertise to customers worldwide.


Special Products designs and creates unique credit insurance solutions for individual contracts or situations, as well as for portfolios of obligors, either for corporates, traders or financial institutions.

Our solutions range from a short tenor spot cargo up to 12-years Project Finance deals.

Our specific team's areas of expertise and focus are the following solutions, all either syndicated or not and on broker wordings or our own:


  • Single Risks transactions for corporates and traders, commonly up to 1 year.
  • Excess of Loss and Multibuyer policies, commonly with 1 to 2year policy periods.
  • Portfolio solutions for Financial Institutions, specifically Receivables Purchase programs.
Within the team we have responsibilities throughout the entire lifecycle of an insurance transaction with a focus on policy underwriting;

  • We are responsible for lead generation and the acquisition of new business,
  • We take an active role in the risk underwriting by reviewing new insurance requests and making proposals internally to our risk analysts on whether we should accept these,
  • Price the deals accordingly,
  • Negotiate policy wordings,
  • Manage the accounts we onboard and
  • We have a role to play all the way through to claims assessment and payment.


At the moment, around 50% of our time is dedicated on generating and assessing new enquiries and the other 50% of our time is spend on managing and servicing our existing book of business.

This Commercial Underwriter position will have a slightly larger focus on generating and assessing new enquiries as supposed to account management.


What qualification should you have?

  • An education of at least Bachelor level or equivalent experience, combined with a mature business understanding
  • Strong research / analytical skills (corporate & financial, sectorial, political risk as well as transactional analysis) with affinity in geopolitics and economics
  • A proven understanding of the business environment and creativity in finding the right solutions always keeping sight of risks involved
  • A proven networker
  • Very comfortable in a customer facing role and managing a portfolio of highly demanding customers.
  • Preferably existing working experience as an Underwriter, Sales Manager, Broker or Account Manager in credit insurance, ideally with an existing network in London
  • First class organizational skills and the ability to manage strategic partnerships at all levels, from operational to Csuite, while working well under pressure.
  • Able to provide structured updates to all stakeholders (line management, other departments, external stakeholders).
  • A team player with excellent communication skills in English, and a strong command of Microsoft products (Excel, Word, Teams)
  • Always looking for efficiencies and process improvements
  • Willingness to travel on an occasional basis (national and international).
