Our Acute Medicine team at Southend University Hospital, providing an integral role in the management of medical referrals from both the Emergency Department and direct from Primary Care, has received funding to recruit Clinical fellows (ST1-8)


Although this post is not recognised for training, we offer support in developing a Learning Portfolio and regular educational appraisal with a Consultant Educator.

Multi-disciplinary team work is envisaged as a key component of the working of this Trust and will involve Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) discussion with other colleagues.


The Acute Medical Service comprises of an Acute Medical Unit with 24 assessment beds, a 7 day Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC) and our Short Stay Unit.

Patients are referred either by Primary Care, Community nursing teams, outpatient clinics or the Emergency Department.


You will receive, in addition to your base salary a supplement at a rate of 50% (1A) of your base salary for a full shift duty rota including late, nights and weekend working.


Your role will involve continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care, undertaking ward duties under the direction of senior colleagues, providing evidence-based care for patients in a multi-disciplinary setting and conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.


As part of a team, you will work with the Consultant Physicians and a team of junior doctors to manage ward in-patients, may be called upon to see General Medical referrals on other wards, be expected to take part in Clinical Governance Meetings and be involved in Audit within the Department and be expected to supervise junior medical staff and have continuing inpatient responsibility in conjunction with the members of junior doctors' medical team, CMTs, FY2s and FY1s.


All staff in each Directorate are managerially accountable through their Lead Clinician to the Clinical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Directorate and will work in partnership with colleagues in other Directorates within the Trust.
