Job Introduction:

We are looking for a systems engineer with a specialism in digital audio and video encoding and distribution.

This role sits in Media Services, which is part of Digital Distribution. We provide the engine that drives all the BBC's encoding, packaging, and playback for online.

We deal with over 1 billion play requests per month and encode thousands of hours of content every week covering all the BBC video and audio online output.

Main Responsibilities:


  • You will have a key role helping us deliver landmark events online, such as Glastonbury, Wimbledon and the European and World football championships.
  • You'll work on the latest video and audio streaming technologies with key vendors and internal teams to help us improve the quality of our audio and video services for ever increasing audiences.
  • You'll spend time working with 3rd parties, evaluating and testing their digital media products and services for use by the BBC. You'll work with our technical architects and R&D teams to help integrate new products and processes.
  • You'll liaise with our test teams to make sure improvements work across the board on a huge range of consumer devices.
  • You'll help us manage the day to day running and configuration of live and ondemand services for the whole of the BBC. You'll be involved in the development and roll out of new products and services for BBC online.
  • You will have practical experience of audio and video encoding and streaming.
  • You will have an understanding of what factors affect the quality of online video and audio and will be able to demonstrate how these can be optimised for any given situation.
  • Experience of deploying solutions using cloud services is desirable.
  • Some experience of scripting and or programming would be useful, though not essential.
  • You will be able to work with diverse and varied stakeholders with the ability to prioritise between different projects.
  • You'll be up to date with developments in the streaming industry and the products and systems in use by broadcasters and streamers.
  • You'll be good at documenting systems and testing to share with others in a clear and concise way.
