Are you looking for a part time caretaker role?


Would you like to be part of our outstanding team, working at our school on a farm in the glorious rolling hills of Hampshire, where your practical skills, reliability, enthusiasm, and proven problem solving skills can be shown off? We need a caretaker who can look after our property, our gardens, and our allotment.

Do you have excellent property maintenance skills? Are you interested in horticulture? We're looking for a proactive, organised and resourceful team member who will be rightfully proud of our school environment.


Our schools are run by The Green Room Foundation, which is a charity that provides a second chance at education for approximately 70 young people aged 11-18, who have, for various reasons, found it difficult to learn in mainstream education.


The role is based on 30 hours per week and is split over 6 days per week, with 4 weeks paid holiday to be taken in term-time.

The role requires a clean driving licence.


JOB TITLE:
Caretaker


LOCATION:

REPORTING TO:
Operations Director


HOURS: 30 hours per week on average


SALARY:
Subject to skills and experience, paid pro rata for 30 hours per week


PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:


The caretaker's role is to oversee and maintain property and facilities at The Green Room Foundation under the supervision of the Operations Director, in order to enable all our staff to deliver Outstanding education to our pupils.

The role requires a wide range of responsibilities/skills including, building maintenance, minor repairs, animal care, gardening, vehicle management, health & safety checks, cleaning and other elements which will ensure the school is maintained beautifully at all times.


MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:


SITE
Ensure school buildings, grounds and facilities are secure, clean, and well-maintained, performing repairs/maintenance and decorating where appropriate.


Carry out a regular site check to identify items that are misplaced or in need of attention and remedy them or schedule them to be remedied.

Ensure gutters and drains are kept clean and well maintained.


Ensure the efficient working of heating, gas, lighting and alarm systems in the building, and liaise with the administrator with regards to servicing.

During bad weather ensure paths and walkways are clear, gritted and as safe as possible.

Ensure the car park and school site to be kept clear from weeds, glass, debris and litter.

Report any issues concerning cleanliness to the School Manager.


GARDENING
Assist with the allotment and polytunnel/greenhouse in our market garden including mowing/strimming/watering as necessary.

Weed and maintain the garden elements of the site.


ANIMALS
Ensure animal enclosures are secure, clean, and well-maintained, performing repairs/maintenance where appropriate.


If required - visit the site to feed and clean out our animals, to the care programme provided (this includes weekends and bank holidays).

This is not a core part of the role but may be needed on an occasional basis.


VEHICLES
Keep vehicles clean and tidy and undertake regular vehicle checks for our school fleet, liaising with administrators as necessary.

Assist with delivering school vehicles for servicing and repairs.

Provide a porterage service including movement of furniture and equipment (on site and between school sites).

Keep tools, materials and equipment well maintained and in a safe and orderly fashion.


Visit other Green Room sites as required for maintenance, renovations, decorating, deep cleaning where appropriate and other tasks and projects as required by the Operations Director.

Monitor the school calendar to ensure awareness of school events.

Be available for emergency and out of hours call-outs as required.

Assist with events/lettings at school which may or may not be during normal school time. Example duties may consist of putting up signage, directing cars, assisting visitors.


PLANS & BUDGETS
Source maintenance supplies and be willing to research cost effective solutions to building issues i.e. the most appropriate solution to a problem balancing the cost and complexity with the time taken.


Source materials for and build small scale items as needed by the school eg log store, gate, shed or other projects happening on site.


Understand what is required to keep the premises running efficiently and effectively and produce an annual plan of what is required with timelines, in liaison with the Operations Director.

Be able to work to any budgets given.


HEALTH & SAFETY


Ensure the Health & Safety policy is being adhered to and ensure checks are carried out weekly, monthly, annually as necessary and relevant actions/paperwork is completed in a timely manner to the regulations.

These could include items from any of the below:

  • Fire Log checks (fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, fire safety equipment, fire doors, fire escape routes, roller shutter checks
