Purpose of the role


The External Affairs apprentice is a new role that will help the wider External Affairs team deliver a crucial element of our YWL strategy: strengthening DofE's voice and network around issues that affect young people's life chances and wellbeing.

Focusing particularly on education, employment opportunities and mental health, you'll help us influence debate and decisions - in a way that is relevant and engaging for young people, ensuring their voices are heard.

You'll have the opportunity to help to shape this vital work.


The policy and research apprentice will take responsibility for supporting colleagues deliver core external affairs, thereby gaining a solid grounding of the fundamentals and progressing towards a Policy and research or external affairs qualification.


  • Write and support DofE, briefings, letters, summaries, blogs, opeds, and tweet sheets.
  • To support EA's work with media and youth ambassadors.
  • Basic background research: gather, research, and analyse information, and keep ongoing internal research products up to date.
  • Support external affairs team with various administrative tasks, including scheduling and note taking.
  • Conduct project specific research as needed.
  • Support the policy and campaigns officer to deliver DofE's campaign work.
  • Keep up with current events and be able to share in a comprehensive and cohesive way with the entire organisation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What we are looking for:


We are looking for a proactive, enthusiastic, people person to join our team - someone who is looking to kick-start their career in the charity / non-for-profit sector and wants the opportunity to work towards achieving a level 5 apprenticeship.


To qualify for the apprenticeship you must have achieved / 5 GCSE grade 4 (grade c) or above including Maths and English, hold a qualification in Higher education, A Levels, BETEC, HND or predicted to achieve.


What will you get in return?
A starting salary between £22,757 - £26,270 pa depending on experience.

The DofE are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people. All successful applicants will be required to undergo a Basic Disclosure and Barring Service check.
