These are exciting times for the Charity and we have an excellent opportunity for an adaptable and highly professional individual with outstanding communication, interpersonal and leadership skills to join the dedicated Research and Operational Support Department, as Head of Research.

About You


You will have extensive research experience including animal behaviour and welfare assessment and a comprehensive knowledge and practical experience of equids and the problems that may affect them.


You will also have:
*Significant experience of managing a multi-disciplinary team.
*Experience in an academic research environment including research funding and legislation.
*Excellent analytical and research skills with experience in design and management of large scale, complex projects and the ability to digest, assimilate and analyse large amounts of complex data.
*Proven ability writing for scientific papers and presenting at scientific meetings and in relevant forums and publications.

The Role


As Head of Research, you will oversee the day to day activities of the Research team across global sites, programmes and partnerships.

You will work with senior stakeholders across the charity to implement and deliver an effective research strategy and to develop new funding streams and identify new research opportunities and collaborations.

You will play a key role in engaging with collaborating researchers, students and institutions to provide credible evidence of the impact of TDS work globally, ensuring that staff and supporters are fully engaged with research activities.


Your principal duties and responsibilities will include:
*Leading on the development of a research strategy.
*Leading on quantitative and qualitative research.
*Ensuring consistent approaches are taken to measuring donkey welfare and wellbeing and that research activities worldwide develop a comprehensive body of evidence to demonstrate best practice in donkey care, use and interaction.
*Developing and leading on research activities across Operations ensuring that welfare assessment tools are embedded within operational work to provide impact assessment data where required.
*Ensuring that agreed research programmes are carried out effectively.
*Making recommendations for new research which will support, inform and improve the knowledge and understanding of the donkey and mule for both the charity and others.
*Acting as advisor to the charity and on behalf of the charity.

Based in Sidmouth, Devon - an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - this is a full-time, permanent contract starting as soon as possible, working 37.5 hours per week, Monday-Friday.


The working pattern for this role will combine onsite and home working under our guiding principles for such roles, with onsite attendance currently anticipated to be a minimum of 2 days per week.

Flexibility will be required for significant UK and international travel.
