Fulltime salary £22,816.00 rising to £24,336.00 after 2 years

You would become part of a team delivering an invaluable service to the patients of Yorkshire. We are an ambitious and challenging organisation which has a passion for high quality patient care.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust are now recruiting for 999 Call Handlers (Emergency Medical Dispatchers EMD) in our Emergency (999) Operations Centre based in York and Wakefield.

Full training will be provided.

The attached example rota includes a mixture of working unsociable hours, weekends, bank holidays and the Christmas/New Year period.

As a 999 Call Handler (EMD), your role is to answer Emergency and Non-Emergency calls within our Emergency Operations Centre

This could include:

Taking Emergency Calls from members of the public and giving the appropriate advice to care for the patient until the ambulance arrives on scene.
Taking emergency calls from the Police and Fire Services.
Taking emergency and nonemergency bookings from Health Care Professionals (HCPs), Nurses and Hospitals for patient transfers.
Informing Police, Fire and other agencies about incidents.
Assisting ambulance crews and dispatchers with information and directions as and when necessary e.g. during a Major incident.

If you are successful at the shortlisting stage of the process you will be invited to our Wakefield headquarters on the 14th August (provisional date) to complete an assessment.

If you pass the assessment you will be offered an interview on the same day.

Training courses start from September onwards.

Please note, we ask that all those successful at interview are able to commit to 100% attendance on the training course and mentorship periods.

Classroom training will be office hours Monday to Friday at either Gildersome, York or Wakefield. We have a two-tiered structured approach to our training; initially learning how to process Health Care Professional calls.

Once you are comfortable and competent with these calls you will then go through a thorough training package to enable you to take 999 calls and speak to members of the public.

Previous applicants who have been unsuccessful in the EMD/EOC training course within the last 6 months need not apply.
