18 Month Fixed Term Student Experience Post


The Information Services Group (ISG) at the University of Edinburgh is currently offering an exciting student employment opportunity for an individual to work with the Applications directorate as a Service Operations Assistant.


The prospective post holder must be:

  • A current student at the University of Edinburgh (UoE) and residing in the UK.
  • A UoE student for the duration of the post, and eligible to work up to 15 hours per week alongside your studies.

The Opportunity:


The successful individual will join a team of experienced IT professionals providing senior operational support and request fulfilment for a range of services that enhance and support the work of the University.

The services that the post-holder will most often work with includes:

  • Microsoft 365 Collaboration Tools
  • Microsoft Teams & Zoom
  • Atlassian Confluence and Jira
  • Document Management solutions using SharePoint
  • Managed Mobile Service
  • Identity management and Visitor Registration
  • Web Hosting Platform


We are looking for an individual with excellent IT, interpersonal, communication, organisational and written skills who can effectively advise users on services and liaise with user facing and technical teams.


Duties and Responsibilities include:

  • Providing operational support for the range of existing services managed by IS Apps Service Management. Responsible for triage, investigation and support of calls escalated from our Service Desks as well as actioning service requests and standard changes owned by the team
  • Perform regular operational activities such as reporting or preparing billing information
  • Maintain documentation and knowledge management materials for services managed within the team
  • Managing mobile phone and contract orders and configurations for customers across the University
  • Create user guides for publishing online
  • Collating and formatting service data for use in regular service reporting activities. Producing monthly service reports for specified services

Your skills and attributes for success:

  • A current University of Edinburgh student (this post is designated for the purposes of student employment, therefore you must be a matriculated student for the duration of your employment, 18 months)
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including to liaise effectively with a varied diverse range of people
  • Proven ability to gather technical information on problems and suggest alternative solutions
  • Ability to follow procedures
  • Computing skills sufficient to provide support to other users
