Ipswich Community Media (ICM) is looking for a new part-time ESOL Tutor to work in our Integration Team


Who are we?


Ipswich Community Media is a small local charity based just off Norwich Road in Ipswich working with and for the local community through music, media, the creative arts and language learning.


Our focus is rooted in a deep belief in fairness and social justice to work with those at the very margins of society to make Ipswich a better place for all.


All of our offerings are free at the point of access because we passionately believe that open access for the most disadvantaged in our community is vital for a healthy inclusive society.


We work predominantly in the Westgate ward of Ipswich, one of the most diverse and exciting areas of our town.

It is also an area with many challenges, as it is one of the most deprived wards in the country.

But with around a third of local residents from migrant and refugee communities we are proud to be part of such a diverse neighbourhood.


We run approximately 17 ESOL classes every week (including evenings and weekends) to over 200 learners from more than 25 different nationalities.

All of our courses are free at the point of access and range from pre-entry level through to IT and Digital.


Overall purpose of the role


Working as part of a team of ESOL tutors, supported by an admin team and volunteers, the role-holder will undertake formal scheduled teaching, student assessment, student registration, educational guidance, preparation of learning materials and student assignments, marking of students' work, preparing students for exams, developing flyers and resources on key topics like safeguarding, developing learning materials to support learners if and when online teaching is required.


The post holder will be required to work on a range of projects funded from a variety of different sources including Suffolk County Council and National Lottery.


Accountability
The post holder will be accountable to the Lead Tutor and Integration Team Director


Key responsibilities:


  • Teach and assess on one or more of the courses for the project and contribute to the development of existing and new, innovative provision.
  • Complete the administrative work associated with teaching efficiently and effectively, including completion of registers, lesson planning documentation, schemes and records of work, Individual Learning Plan (ILPs), learner tracking and monitoring documentation and various forms of learner report.
  • Design and prepare course outlines and lesson plans.
  • Participate fully in staff learning and development activities, including teaching, learning and assessment practices, lesson observation and peer reviews, motivational dialogue as part of coaching/tutoring for learners, and undertake training or retraining as required.
  • Participate in the recruitment, selection and interviewing processes for new learners and actively be engaged in induction activities for new learners
  • Be an active course team member and participate fully in meetings, staff learning and development training sessions, conferences, seminars, open evenings and learner assessment/progression events and selfassessment in addition to teaching and administrative responsibilities
  • Work flexibly, which may include teaching weekend and evening classes.
  • To have a duty of care to yourself and others regarding Health and Safety issues and ensure that Health & Safety Policies and Procedures are implemented.
  • To actively promote Equality & Diversity policies, ensuring promotion of E&D in all sessions and activities.
  • To actively promote ICM's safeguarding policy and be aware of your responsibilities to report concerns.

Who we are looking for

Essential

Attainments

  • Will hold a relevant L4 teaching qualification
  • Will hold, or be working towards, an ESOL or Basic Skills Specialist Subject qualification at
Level 4 or above in Literacy or Numeracy

  • Satisfy an enhanced DBS check.

Knowledge

  • Understanding and expertise in the field of ESOL and Functional skills
  • Understanding of informal education and experience with learners aged adults 16+
  • Awareness of the issues surrounding, and the needs of, socially excluded and disadvantaged groups and of the barriers to learning and progression

Skills

  • Ability to communicate with clients and professionals individually and in groups
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills
  • Organisational skills, including time management, planning and target setting recording and monitoring
Demonstrable practical experience of curriculum development and delivering informal and innovative learning and training programmes
