Description

Synnovis' Biochemical Sciences Service, based at St Thomas' Hopsital, with a satellite service at the Denmark Hill site, is looking to appoint an Operations Lead - Mass Spectrometry, equivalent to Band 8a, to join our team.


This high impact role will enable you to support and contribute towards ground breaking pathology tests, work with peers across borders and enhance your professional development.


As a leader, you will be encouraged to support the service's ambition of using the latest technology to enhance patient outcomes, whilst providing support in highly specialised manual and semi-automated investigations; you will be provided with the opportunity to work collaboratively on innovative new investigative techniques and be expected to contribute to new methodologies whilst maintaining quality standards.


Managing a team of Biomedical Scientists, you will take ownership of the day to day operations of the Mass Spectrometry team whilst drawing on the excellent support of a pool of Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants.

You will be further supported by the Service Delivery Manager for Reference Services, the Director of Service and a strong team of Clinical Scientists, working collaboratively to meet the needs of the patients.

This is an opportunity to work with experts in their field, you will be able to learn, develop and have exposure to range of specialist areas.


The Mass Spectrometry section is responsible for the provision of routine laboratory tests including the immunosuppressant drug monitoring service and hydroxychloroquine.

The Team is also responsible for maintenance, troubleshooting and technical support of the mass spectrometers across Biochemical Sciences, and training and method validation development.

As Operations Lead for the team the main duties include but are not limited to:

Responsibility for day-to-day management of the function of their department and the associated areas of responsibilities, including provision of the 7 days immunosuppressant service

Work with clinical, scientific and operational teams to establish future service alignments and establish a framework for ways of working

Be involved in relevant discussions pertaining to service improvement and developmental changes with the Director of Service and the Service Delivery Manager including specialist and routine diagnostic provision

Take support research, development and evaluation of new techniques presenting information in a clearly documented form for discussion with senior staff

Overall responsibility and delegation of the provision of accurate pathology services within acceptable turnaround times

The post holder will have extensive analytical and technical experience, and is capable of troubleshooting to ensure reliable service delivery

Responsibilities:

Operational

Overall responsibility and delegation of the provision of accurate pathology services within acceptable turnaround times, including provision of the 7-day immunosuppressant service


To support resolution of complex technical laboratory problems using prior experience and analytical skills in order to manage situations and prevent them resulting in any service delivery failure.

Review, document and maintain all laboratory procedures e.g. SOPs and policies in an acceptable form for accreditation

Ensure standards as required by ISO15189:2022 are maintained and, where possible, improved upon

Ensure that capital equipment is maintained to the standards required by the department and by relevant legislation

The post holder will promote the continuous improvement in service delivery and quality within all areas of the department

The post holder will have responsibility for day-to-day management of the function of their department and the associated areas of responsibilities

Line management of staff within the remit of the post

Supervise staff rotation of BMS and MLA grades within the Department areas to ensure completion of training programmes and continuing maintenance and development of skills and knowledge; taking an active role in the monitoring and allocation of staff levels to meet workload requirements of the sections, maximise staff and equipment resources

Manage the rota for provision of immunosuppressant services on weekends and bank holidays

To assist and support the Director of Service and Service Delivery Manager in the production of accurate costings for laboratory procedures and commercial trials and contracts

Ensure incidents and events are correctly and promptly reported and investigated
