Description

As part of a small but dynamic design team, a Game Designer at Coatsink is responsible for designing and maintaining the design of a game, ensuring that the game's content is built closely to that design and to a defined high standard.


The postholder will communicate primarily with the Lead designer, design team and with seniors from other disciplines, to ensure the whole team understands the project's design.

The Mid Level Game Designer may assist and support Junior Game Designers in their activity and development.


The Game Designer may be required to adopt the role of "Feature Owner" for a certain game feature, mechanic, level or other segment of the game, for which they will be solely responsible for the design and development of said area to a high-quality degree.


Responsibilities & Tasks

  • Designing content for the game according to the project's design
  • Designing and implementing levels with great pacing and flow
  • Sharing your level design knowledge to the wider team
  • Building game content in Unity
  • Maintaining content integrity across the life of the project
  • Creating and maintaining design documentation, including feature specification and implementation guidelines
  • Participating in regular team 'show and tell meetings, to share information, learn and collaborate on problem solving
  • Developing and maintaining regular and strong communications with Programmers, Artists, Animators and Audio to ensure all aspects of the game content meet the project's high standard design
  • Develop prototypes and explore new game ideas
  • Participate in research and development exercises as required
  • Participate in market studies and propose new game concepts/ideas
  • Undertake any other reasonable assigned duty, that is line with postholders skills, knowledge and ability

Person Specification

Games Designer

Qualifications:


  • Relevant university degree or a strong up to date project portfolio
Experience

  • At least two years' experience working in a game design role
  • At least one title shipped while working in a game design role
  • Preferably experience in a Games Designer role on a released unitybased game
  • Significant Unity experience
  • Level design experience
  • Experience using Atlassian software (Jira, Confluence etc)
  • Ideally, experience leading a feature or small interdisciplinary team on a released title
  • Experience working within project management methodology such as SCRUM
  • Experience of developing for VR

  • Excellent writing skills and a passion for storytelling
  • Innovative problemsolving skills
  • Competent art / graphic design skills to help elevate design documentation and get ideas across
  • Highly developed communication skills
  • Competent IT skills
  • The ability to impart information, encourage and support junior or less experienced members of the team
Knowledge

  • Thorough and expansive understanding of level design, UX design, and game design fundamentals
  • Thorough understanding of games market and target audience
  • Basic practical knowledge of scripting or visual scripting
Aptitude

  • Skilled in working in both small and large teams
  • Adept at adapting quickly to changes and new problems
  • Adept at taking and seeking out constructive criticism and using it to improve designs and workflows
  • Strong passion for playing video games across a wide variety of genres and advanced analysis of what makes them good/bad
