Description

Responsibilities will include:

The Numerical Physics Group Lead, with their team, will determine, implement, and improve physics models, numerical algorithms, and code features, in cooperation with theoretical physicists, model validation analysis, and software engineers.

Extensive model verification testing and cross-code comparison will be used to detect implementation errors effecting critical physics in the fusion system.

Improvement of code performance and robustness from the perspective of mathematical and physical modelling will also be part of responsibilities.

In support of the wider department, you will help colleagues to identify, develop, and qualify the models and computational tools that the scientific team use for end-to-end design, optimisation, and interpretation of First Light's inertially confined fusion systems and experiments, which currently includes:

  • A 2D AMR radiation-hydrodynamics code
  • A 3D radiation MHD code
  • Equation of State models
  • Microphysics models
  • Opacity models
  • A systems code and associated submodels
  • An extensive continuous integration suite of verification and validation test cases
We endeavor to develop our computational tools to the highest levels of science and engineering quality and assurance, where practicably possible

Essential:

  • A PhD in a relevant technical discipline (e.g. Physics, Mathematics, Engineering etc.)
  • Demonstrable technical leadership in the development of multiphysics hydrodynamics or CFD codes
  • Expert knowledge of finitevolume based algorithms relating to time accurate advection and diffusion
  • Detailed knowledge of code verification approaches
  • A proven track record of successfully planning and executing code development and qualification projects.
  • A very strong understanding of computational physics and software engineering practices
  • Demonstrated selfmotivation, enthusiasm to work in a dynamic team environment, and evidence of taking the initiative.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Desirable:

  • A comprehensive understanding of the physics of inertial confinement fusion
  • Experience with MHD code development
  • Experience with multimaterial interface algorithms
  • Previous team/group management experience
  • Experience of code verification to ASME or equivalent standards
