Overall Purpose of Job


As a member of the database team, the DBA should demonstrate a strong technical ability across the Microsoft SQL stack, as well as the ability to work with other DBAs and wider teams.

This role will focus heavily on monitoring, reporting, performance tuning,ETL, High Availability disaster recovery and release management.


Support, maintenance, and administration of the on-prem SQL Server estate deployed at Kensington, whilst participating in design, planning and migration to off-prem, cloud-based solutions.

The estate covers multiple environments (PROD, DR, UAT, Test and Development) and multiple SQL versions (2K5 through to 2019).

These databases are a mixture of in house and supplier developed environments.


Work with all other areas of IT to and areas of the business where needed, to ensure requests are met and fixed in a timely manner.

Work on further monitoring using PowerShell, SQL Agent Jobs and TSQL.

Work on DR and HA solutions and help to create a DR plan for all PROD systems.


They should have a strong customer service focus and be accustomed to working with best practices frameworks for change management and release management.


Key Accountabilities

  • Must have strong coding skills in PowerShell and TSQL, and experience setting on custom monitoring and reporting.
  • Providing database usage and performance reports, setting up SQL Server Agent jobs, operators and alerts.
  • Understanding and management of database backup and recovery techniques.
  • Understanding and creation of disaster recovery solutions for SQL.
  • Design and implement database migration and upgrade strategies.
  • Maintain SQL Server security via regular auditing.
  • Maintain database changes from Development through to Production following agreed release management processes.
  • Patching of the SQL estate to keep SQL servers secure and in a supportable state.
  • Design and implement highly available production systems (Clustering, replication, DB Mirroring)
  • Understanding of ETL, and batch processes, using replication and SSIS
  • Maximum attention for details is essential for this role.
  • Understand DNS and DFS.
  • Ability to provide overnight oncall support for batch processes.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills

  • Bringing strong DBA skill set to the team
  • Ensure that all databases are maintained in a professional and cost effective manner and are available for the business (including IT) according to published SLAs.
  • Have worked in an ETL driven environment
  • Have worked extensively with PowerShell to create custom scripts
  • To have set up a full DR environment
  • Understanding of a release best practice
  • Have pride in ensuring best practice is kept to
  • Created custom reports using Power BI and SSRS
  • Have used Redgate tools

Qualifications

  • Microsoft Certified IT Professional: Database Administrator (2005/2008/ desirable but not essential
