Description

The North Bristol Lung Centre was formed in 2006, merging the respiratory departments from Frenchay and Southmead hospital to create a single site based speciality, serving a population of 500,000-800,000.

The department currently has 11 NHS consultants. In addition, we are supported by 3 other colleagues with joint academic contracts who contribute to the ward rota. There are 5 SpRs, 4 F2s and 3 F1 doctors together with research staff. Inpatients are cared for on our speciality wards which include high care/NIV beds.

The department operates an early discharge scheme for COPD and a pulmonary rehabilitation program together with oxygen clinics and an innovative rapid access admission avoidance (HOT) clinic.

There is a large establishment of specialist respiratory nurses and physiotherapists working within the department and in the community.

The department provides the full range of respiratory services and runs a number of specialist clinics and services including interstitial lung disease, pleural disease, bronchiectasis, difficult asthma, combined lung cancer clinic, a shared TB/infection clinic with infectious diseases, and medical thoracoscopy, bronchoscopy (including EBUS).

We currently have ILD, asthma centre and MDRTB (shared with UHB) centre status.

This appointment is to support the general respiratory and specialist work of the department.
