The Faculty brings together the Health and Care Research Wales personal award schemes and other future related initiatives under the banner of the Faculty.

The Faculty is led by a Director and is supported by a team within S&DC including the Head of Researcher Development, and a Faculty Admin team.

The post holder will provide specialist project, performance, and financial management support to the Senior Faculty Manager in managing a range of H&CRW personal awards schemes and developing and implementing a performance management framework for use across all schemes.

Work as part of the H&CRW Faculty team to support the development of new Faculty initiatives, translating and implementing Welsh Government policy in relation to Research Careers in Wales.


Work closely with Welsh Government colleagues to ensure that personal awards are managed according to agreed performance standards, payment processes and schedules.

The successful postholder will be highly organised, have excellent analytical and communication skills and be an effective team player. Working within the H&CRW Faculty Admin team and report to the Senior Faculty Manager.

Line manage and operationally direct the work of the Programme Co-ordinators and deputise for the Senior Faculty Manger where required.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Project Management

  • Provide specialist project management expertise in the planning and administration of personal awards funding calls and ongoing management of H&CRW funding awards.
  • Work closely with the Senior Faculty Manger to plan and deliver a number of complex funding calls each year, having operationally responsibility for managing the entire process working with the Programme Coordinators including developing and launching the call, setting up and running the assessment panels, notifying the successful and unsuccessful applicants and project managing all successful awards.
  • Develop and manage a programme plan covering all Faculty workstreams, monitoring progress across all workstreams, making adjustments to plans in a live and responsive way where needed; reporting to senior management regularly on progress and escalating issues that require attention in a timely way.
  • Develop project plans for each successful award, project managing delivery of these plans for the entire funding period; adjusting plans inyear in response to new developments or if targets are not met.
  • Negotiate, influence, and motivate senior researchers to ensure project delivery according to agreed timescales
  • Analyse progress reports submitted by researchers and working with WG colleagues resolve failures to meet project milestones.
  • Ensure data collection systems are established and managed effectively with the purpose to monitor financial expenditure of all awards managing the associated budgets in a live and responsive manner.
  • Liaise with the WG team to ensure adequate financial reporting systems are in place and utilized consistently and effectively by the team, ensuring requirements are met to adhere to WG financial management system/process requirements.
  • Produce update papers for the Faculty leadership team and H&CRW Welsh Government summarising progress to date for individual personal awards schemes both in terms of performance and financial metrics.
Performance Management

  • Provide performance management expertise to the Senior Faculty Manager and wider team to lead the development of a performance management framework which will be used to effectively manage the funding awards under the following H&CRW personal awards schemes:
  • Research Time Awards
  • Social Care Studentships
  • Health Studentships
  • Social Care Fellowships
  • Health Fellowships
  • Any other funding scheme H&CRW WG wishes the Faculty to run
  • Effectively manage and resolve, daily, any issues relating to H&CRW personal awards schemes funding awards, utilising the performance management framework as appropriate.
