Job summary:


We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual to play a vital role in the laboratory by supporting the Biomedical Scientists.

The post holder will act as a Health and Safety Assistant (HSSW) to provide technical and clerical support to the health and safety officers and to work as part of Laboratory Health and Safety Team.


The laboratory in Birmingham is a UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) microbiology laboratory and is in partnership with University Hospitals Birmingham Trust (UHB).

The microbiology partnership provides comprehensive microbiology services and specialist services to Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital in Sutton Coldfield, Solihull Hospital and general practitioners throughout the area.


The post holder will act as a Health and safety Assistant (HSSW) to provide technical and clerical support to the health and safety officers and to work as part of Laboratory Health and Safety Team.

You would need to deliver safety training within their competence as agreed with the Laboratory Manager and also assist the manager to ensure COSHH and risk assessments are up to date.

You would need to ensure that safety notices and instructions relating to equipment are displayed where appropriate. You would need to participate in safety audits and in inspections.

You would be required to attend and participate in Health and safety meetings at a local, trust and regional level.

The postholder would need to maintain and keep action plans up to date and to update H&S toolbox talks.

This is a lab-based role at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, B9 5SS.

Job description:


As the Health & Safety Assistant your main responsibilities will include:
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • To be responsible for advising and assisting the Laboratory Manager in the development, implementation and maintenance of health and safety
  • To assist the Laboratory Manager in incident management after a significant accident or incident
  • To assist the Laboratory Managers in reporting accidents/incidents on Trackwise and Q pulse
  • To ensure Health and safety inductions are done for all new staff temporary and permanent
  • To assist the Manager by ensuring safety signs are displayed and safety policies and procedures are adhered toTo maintain and keep Key equipment serviced and calibrated e.g. Centrifuges, Anemometer and Formaldemeter
  • You would be required to attend and participate in Health and safety meetings at a local, trust and regional level.
