Description
To be responsible for the evaluation of visual acuity and visual behaviour in all children referred to the department. Responsibility to formulate individualised management and treatment plans, using clinical reasoning and evidence based practice.

To communicate these plans effectively with patients, parents and carers, and to assess capacity and gain informed consent to further management.

Participate in Orthoptic led triage clinics which include new and follow up case referrals, prioritising the urgency for treatment/referral (fast track to Ophthalmologist) as required.

Participate in Orthoptic follow up clinics and Ophthalmology clinics at other Trust locations e.g. Northern General Hospital OPD2 site or other locations as and when available.

Responsibility to formulate relevant plans/ advise on onward investigations such as Electro-Diagnostic Tests (EDTs), MRIs, medical photography, low vision service at SCH, visual fields and general paediatric assessments.

To formulate relevant discharge plans and onward referral to other professionals, for example community optometrists, Visual Impairment Team (education), and transition to Low Vision Service at RHH.


This requires detailed verbal and written explanations to ensure parents and carers are provided with the necessary information for onward referral.

Keep accurate records of assessment and prescriptions in the Medical Record and be aware of all relevant legislation and Trust policies.

Work closely with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, including administrative, nursing, medical and orthoptic disciplines to provide an integrated service.

To be aware of issues surrounding Child Protection, reporting concerns to the Head Orthoptist /Lead Orthoptist and Safeguarding Nurses and documenting appropriately.
