At GDS we design, develop and manufacture materials testing machines and software and software used for the computer-controlled testing of soils and rocks.

This technology is used to evaluate the mechanical properties that are key in geotechnical and earthquakeengineering design


We are now looking for a talented
Embedded Systems Engineer to compliment our multi-disciplinary team in completing our current projects before taking a more leading role in the next generation of greenfield development.


Embedded Systems Engineer - The role:
You will be responsible for developing robust and highly maintainable code running in advanced geotechnical testing machines.

You will be an integral part in the end-to-end development and testing of firmware and embedded software.

Your role will focus on writing code for microcontrollers that handle data acquisition and processing, actuator control and communication protocols.


In addition to this you will also be responsible for:

  • Developing and maintaining C / C++ code running on bespoke electronics
  • Integrating code into new and existing electromechanical systems
  • Being an active member of a high skilled multidisciplinary development team
  • Being actively involved in the complete development cycle, from design to testing, debugging and support
  • Integrating with existing team processes on planning, version control and documentation

In order to be successful in this role you must have:

  • A Degree in electronics, computer science or engineering
  • Significant programming experience in C or C++
  • Experience working on embedded firmware development (microcontrollers)
  • Experience in working in realtime systems (ideally motion control)

It would also be beneficial if you have:

  • Experience with bare metal and/or RTOS environments
  • Experience with Microchip dsPIC or STM32 microcontrollers
  • Experience in troubleshooting embedded systems and microcontroller peripherals
  • Experience with electromechanical control systems
  • Experience in interfaces and hardware subsystems
  • Knowledge and understanding of electronics
  • Knowledge of Assembler
  • Knowledge of C# and WPF
  • Knowledge of software development tools and procedures (GIT, version control)
