GSC Grays are a multi-disciplinary professional service firm covering the North of England.

Our Chartered Surveyors, Farm Business Consultants, Planning and Development Professionals, Valuers, Environmental Specialists and Estate Agents provide a full range of services for our rural client base.


Due to a period of sustained growth, we are looking to recruit a consultant to join our Environment & Sustainability team in either our Chester-Le-Street office.

From here you will report to the Head of Environment and Sustainability, working closely with other members of the team based in Colburn and Kirkby Lonsdale

They are nationally recognised for their expertise in the field and chairs the CAAV's Environment & Land Use Committee.

The Head of Environment and Sustainability has led the department to deliver ground-breaking projects and in doing so, developed a genuine expertise in the field.


Recent notable projects include:

  • Development and submission of a Landscape Recovery funding bid for an area of over 17,000 hectares.
  • Delivery of two Natural Environment Investment Readiness Fund (NEIRF) projects.
  • Management of four innovative ELM Test & Trial projects.

Main purpose of the job:


GSC Gray's Environment & Sustainability team work with land owners, farmers and land managers to support sustainable management of the natural environment.

We provide targeted advice on the opportunities available to clients through environmental schemes and emerging nature markets, helping them to identify projects and funding streams that are a good fit for their land and business.


As an E&S Consultant you will help clients to deliver conservation projects that have lasting environmental, social, and economic benefits.

We take a pragmatic and holistic approach to environmental management that integrates environmental outcomes with the business objectives and financial interests of our clients.


Opportunities for securing funding for, and generating income from, environmental management in England are now emerging at pace and from multiple sources.

The E&S department is focussed on bringing these new opportunities to our clients' and colleagues' awareness and helping them to understand, critique and pursue them as appropriate.


Within this role you will work closely with the Head of the department and will be responsible for advising farmers and landowners on environmental schemes and markets.

You will also take a lead on researching and managing new service lines and engaging in business development across the North East of England.


Reporting Structure:
The role reports to the Head of Environment and Sustainability.


The role and responsibilities:

  • Managing the delivery of longterm ambitious projects such as Natural Environmental Investment Readiness fund (NEIRF) and Landscape Recovery projects.
  • Attending client meetings including consultations with farmers and landowners and running workshops and webinars.
  • Work closely with the internal farm business and estate management teams to support our clients through the agricultural transition.
  • Keep up to date and undertake research to ensure relevant environmental policies and legislation, and their implications for GSC Grays and our clients are understood and effectively communicated.
  • Liaison with colleagues, clients, and government agencies.
  • Research and develop new opportunities for GSC Grays and our clients.
  • Project managing and leading on conservation projects and funding bids at a range of scales.

The skills we are looking for in you:

  • A Minimum of 2 years' experience operating within a similar role
  • Degree qualified in a relevant field or relevant work experience.
  • FAAV and/or RICS accredited desirable, or qualified in a relevant field such as ecology, environmental sciences, conservation or forestry
  • In depth understanding and knowledge of natural capital principles and emerging environmental markets, and current and future grant schemes.
  • Awareness and understanding of how new markets and opportunities might impact farm businesses, rural estates, and other landbased enterprises
  • Confident liaising with clients and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Commercially astute.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritise tasks.
  • Enthusiastic to take on new challenges and projects.
  • Mapping/GIS skills.
  • Comfortable undertaking business development/public speaking engagements.
