The role:


We are looking for an experienced Residential Life or Student Services professional to join our large 24/7 Residential Life team, responsible for supporting over 8500 students living in our residences.

Working with our team of Residential Life Managers, Residential Life Advisers and Chief and Senior Residents, you will adopt a proactive approach to enhancing student wellbeing and developing a sense of community and belonging in residential settings.


You will have the training, experience and expertise to provide a consistent point of support, advice and escalation for all complex student wellbeing cases, supporting a team of Residential Life Advisers with support from the Residential Life Managers.

You will have the experience, skills and confidence to make decisions about next steps and appropriate actions including escalation.

These post holders will also be responsible for working with the Residential Life Managers to oversee the allocation of student cases and the coordination and management of tasks and activities to the team of Residential Life Advisers working on shift.


The post holders will also line manage Chief Residents and their team of Senior Residents both within and outside of the city of Bristol.


These post holders will also provide operational support to the team of advisers, acting as shift supervisers, taking responsibility for resolving any issues while on shift, taking decisions and actions, escalating and working in partnership with the Residential Life Managers and Senior Residential Life Managers where appropriate.


What will you be doing?:


  • Provide advice and support to a team of Residential Life Advisers and Chief and Senior Residents, facilitating shift briefings and working with the Residential Life Duty Managers to coordinate and allocate student cases and tasks to members of the team.
  • Support the team of Residential Life Advisers and Chief and Senior Residents to provide appropriate, proactive wellbeing support to students and to develop and deliver a comprehensive and diverse range of community building campaigns, activities and events.
  • Act as Operational lead and shift supervisor, providing guidance and support to the team of Residential Life Advisers and Chief and Senior Residents, trouble shooting and resolving any issues while on shift.
  • Act as an initial point of escalation for any complex student wellbeing and behavioural issues while on shift, liaising with the Residential Life Duty Manager and Senior on call rota where appropriate.
  • Liaise and work in partnership with other specialist teams across the university including Student Counselling and Disability Services and specialist external services to ensure a coordinated and appropriate approach to support.
  • Manage a case load of medium to high student wellbeing cases.
  • Provide support and advice to students residing outside Bristol, including on site visits and contributing to the development of a programme of activities.
  • Respond to out of hours telephone calls from Wellbeing Access and take appropriate action.
  • Work in close partnership with Residential Life Managers to provide a coordinated and consistent to support across the Residential Life service.
  • This role may also include chairing and participating in Support to Study and Student Discipline meetings.
  • Significant experience pf providing mental health and wellbeing support.
  • Experience of working with students or young people.
  • Commitment and ability to support students from a wide range of diverse backgrounds.
  • Good understanding of complex wellbeing issues and skills and confidence to take appropriate action including risk management.
  • Experience of planning and delivering campaigns, activities and events.
  • Experience of working as part of a team
  • Experience of leading an operational team is desirable.

Additional information:

Senior Residential Life Advisers will be required to work on an alternating shift pattern covering weekends, days and nights.

The post holders will be required to work on bank holidays and university closure days on a rota basis to be agreed.

Enhanced pay and/or TOIL will be available for these periods in line with the University's standard Terms and Conditions.
