Job Purpose
To provide a range of mobility, teaching and research support to a member of staff with a visual impairment.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • To chaperone the staff member to work locations across the University of Glasgow Gilmorehill Campus as required, ensuring a safe route of passage between locations.
  • Support the staff member to identify and rehearse routes to travel independently.
  • Support the staff member with the set-up and where necessary the operation of IT and AV equipment required for teaching, in various locations across the Gilmorehill Campus.
  • Assist the staff member with marking activity by reading out student work which may be hand-written in English, Latin or Greek.
  • Assist the staff member in their preparation of teaching materials.
  • Support the staff member with their research activity. This will be by reading out and/or recording literature from various formats e.g., texts, hand-written documents which can be multi-lingual e.g. French, German, Italian, Latin and Greek.
  • Assist the staff member with proof-reading their work.
  • Provide administrative support with the visual operation of IT packages where required.
  • Retrieve from the Library, photocopy or scan visual images or texts that have been identified by the staff member.
  • As required, accompany the staff member to external conferences and meetings to ensure safe movement around the location.
  • Undertake relevant training as appropriate to the role.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Experience and Skills

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential:

A1 Basic knowledge of Greek and Latin at Level 1 (40 credits) or above gained through study or equivalent experience
A2 Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, and Adobe Reader


Desirable:

B1 Basic knowledge of French and/or German
B2 Knowledge of the Moodle virtual learning environment
B3 Awareness of GDPR


Skills

Essential:

C1 Ability to pronounce Greek and Latin to a basic level.
C2 Attention to detail and surroundings.
C3 Good planning and organisation skills.
C4 Excellent timekeeping.

C5 Integrity and the ability to deal with confidential material in line with University policies and General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).

C6 Strong interpersonal skills.
C7 A flexible working approach to meeting the changing priorities of the staff member.


Experience

Desirable:

F1 Experience of reading Scholarly Publications in the field of Classics


Other

In non-teaching weeks there will be a mínimal amount of chaperoning, and a greater focus on research support and teaching preparation.


Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 5, £25,138 - £29,605 per annum pro rata.

This post is part-time (7 hours per week), and open ended with funding available until 31 August 2026 in the first instance.
