A. Key Role


It is the role of a Residential Support Worker to be responsible to the Senior Residential Care Worker, Home Manager and Care Director for the administration of the resource as a whole.


B. Responsible for service delivery

  • To promote normal development of children and young people.
  • Protect children and young people from threats to health, welfare and normal development inside and outside of the home environment.
  • Ensure the home environment is appropriate and sensitive to the needs of children and young people we look after.
  • Assist in the running of the home to meet the expressed needs of the child or young person accommodated.
  • To use the residential community as a means of support and social learning for the child or young person.
  • To use procedures, policies and activities to provide a positive and enjoyable experience for the child or young person they are responsible for.
  • Ensuring key stages in the stay of the child or young person such as admissions, discharge, transfers are properly managed and recorded.
  • Ensuring that a child or young person in crisis or stress is offered appropriate support.
  • To participate in monitoring, recording and development of care plans.
  • Promote and participate in the education of the child or young person and take responsibility for leading all activities which are educational in the home and supporting educational activities at school.
  • Support young people in class with both their education and their behaviour
  • Work together with school staff to make sure young people stay up to date with their homework
  • Ensure that the student is properly prepared for school
  • Present a positive attitude towards all forms of education activities at home and in the school
  • Ensure excellent communication with school staff and to be fully aware and up to date with the supported young person's educational needs and levels.
  • Role model behaviour in accordance with the schools policies and expectations
  • Ensure exemplary communication regarding education between shift changes and between home and school.
  • To provide support for all students attending school, working as a team whilst engaging in school activities.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with clients, individuals with parental responsibility, social workers, teaching staff and other professionals from associated agencies engaged in child care.
  • To ensure specific needs of the child or young person are met such as dietary requirements or religious and cultural activities.
  • To ensure that the child or young person cared for has as much responsibility for their own lives as possible and as appropriate.
  • To inform the child or young person of their circumstances and rights.
  • To involve the child or young person in planning and supporting their development and encouraging them to take greater control and responsibility of their own lives.
  • To provide ongoing support as required.
  • To ensure compliance with Children's Home Regulations. Care Standards Act 2000 and the Children Act 1989.

C Managing People
To assist the Senior Residential Care Worker, Home Manager and Care Director:

  • To ensure supervision is conducted on a regular basis.
  • To have an awareness of the company training plan and ensure that training such as induction of new staff is ongoing and recorded.
  • To be aware of and participate in staff appraisal procedures.
  • To maintain good communication systems between staff and senior management through correct use of handover, message book and team meetings.

D Managing Finances
To assist the Senior Residential Care Worker, Home Manager and Care Director:

  • To assist in the management and operation of budget and petty cash within company guidelines.
  • To understand and operate the financial system correctly.

E Managing Environment
To assist the Senior Residential Care Worker, Home Manager and Care Director to:

  • Create a homely setting to which the child or young person can identify.
  • Maintain a safe environment that complies with Health and Safety and other legal requirements.
  • Maintain the fabric of the building and grounds, and encourage staff and the residents to take full advantage and make best use of the resource.
  • Assist in the development of links between the home, community and child or young person, allowing the child or young person to become an integrated member of
