An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dynamic workforce as an Associate practioner within the Haematology/Transfusion Laboratory of Blood Sciences at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories.

This is a very busy department dedicated to providing the highest quality patient centred service.

The department operates 24 hours, is well equipped with modern automation and processes in excess of samples per annum and is provided across four separate hospital sites:


The laboratory based at the new CSSB facility at Royal Liverpool supports the Clatterbridge Cancer Care Hospital Liverpool and regional specialists' services such as Haemophilia centre and the Haemoglobinopathy and Antenatal Screening Service.

The laboratory based at Aintree University Hospital supports the regions Trauma Centre. This laboratory also serves the Walton Neurological Centre.


Broadgreen Hospital, which is co-located with Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is home to a number of elective surgical, diagnostic and treatment services, together with specialist rehabilitation.


The Liverpool Women's NHS Foundation Trust is the main hospital delivering the highest standards of care for women, babies and families.


The post holder will act as a Associate Practioner within the Blood Sciences Group, providing essential support to state registered Biomedical Scientists, performing analytical procedures to assist with the diagnosis and treatment of patients.

They will assist with the operation of highly complex automated analysers including their quality control, preventative maintenance, minor repair, and undertake manual and semi
- automated procedures under supervision from experienced Biomedical Scientists. They will also perform general laboratory duties both with and without the direct supervision of BMS staff and will directly contribute to maintaining the requirements of the quality management system within the Laboratory.


Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created on 1 October 2019 following the merger of two adult acute Trusts, Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Overview of the role

  • To act as a Laboratory Support Technician, performing a comprehensive range of routine and specialist Biochemistry and Haematology analyses, under supervision from experienced Biomedical Scientists.
  • On rotation, provide assistance to Biomedical Scientists in Non Automated and Core/Automated laboratories.
  • Undertake specialist manual and semiautomated procedures, under supervision from experienced Biomedical Scientists.
  • To maintain, under the supervision of qualified Biomedical Scientists, highly complex analytical equipment in optimum operational condition, taking necessary remedial action during technical failure. Respond to error messages, referring to supervisory staff where necessary, and liaising with engineers called to failing equipment.
  • To enter patient demographic information, collate results and enter data into the laboratory IT systems.
  • To utilise necessary interpersonal skills to ensure effective liaison with service users to provide the best care for the patient.
