Are you a Teaching Assistant with a L2 BSL qualification? Or a trainee Communication Support Worker looking for a change in role?
We're recruiting for a new role to support one of our amazing Teachers at the Deaf Academy for a fixed term role of 3 years.
Due to issues with sight for this member of staff, and the requirements for BSL translation, the role is to provide communication support (voicing over) to enable the Teacher to do their role.
The working hours for this role will vary in the week according to the meetings and planning time for the Teacher, starting between 8.15-9am and finishing between pm.
The role is a term time position, plus an additional week (39 weeks), to provide inset day and classroom preparation support out of term time to work flexibly with the needs of the Teacher.
Some overtime may also be claimable.

Key responsibilities:
- Provide support to a Teacher with sight difficulties to enable her to access communication with deaf learners of college / further education age
- Support the Teacher through sign language communication, notetaking, language modification and lipspeaking
- Support the Teacher when they are adapting resources, planning lessons, marking and report writing, in student annual review meetings and meetings where required
- Be able to work on own initiative, but with supervision and support of the academy's Learning and Support Manager
- Accompany the Teacher on student activities, work experience placement visits, or trips
- Maintain current and accurate records of support work at all times
Key Requirements:
- A minimum of BSL Level 2 qualification is required, with BSL level 3 as desirable
- Level 2 Maths and English (GCSE A*C)
- Experience with communication support for a deaf person/learner
- Knowledge of Deaf culture and community
- Good communication skills, whether written or oral
- Ability to liaise with curriculum and support staff at the academy
- Empathetic and very patient with a supportive attitude to support students
- Reliable and hardworking
- Ability to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children and young adults
- Emotional resilience in working with challenging student behaviours
