The Role


The Head of Safeguarding will create and foster a safeguarding culture across the school by being responsible for developing a strategy for implementing high quality safeguarding provision across the school.

This will include creating an environment in which all pupils are safe and well cared for so that they can realise their individual potential both in and outside of school.

The Head of Safeguarding is responsible for the strategic leadership of safeguarding and wellbeing of children and young people in the school.

They will develop safeguarding and attendance strategies to ensure pupils attend school and that the school remains safe.
They will oversee and influence practice to ensure compliance with safeguarding and pastoral practice, reporting accordingly. Fundamentally, they will ensure that a culture of safeguarding and the implementation of safeguarding remains the school's highest priority.

As every member of staff, the DSL is expected to contribute to the co-curricular life of the school and be a Langley Ambassador in the wider community.

This is a term-time only post, although you shall be expected to attend INSET before term begins and have flexibility during holiday periods to check in with vulnerable pupils.


Main Responsibilities

  • Develop, deliver, and maintain the school's safeguarding strategy ensuring all aspects of Keeping Children Safe in Education (DfE) are considered.
  • Embed a culture of safeguarding across the entire school body.
  • Be a significant presence and profile in the school community.
  • Ensure the implementation and the regular updating of school policies and procedures for the safeguarding of children in line with statutory guidance, ISI requirements and local arrangements as outlined by Local Safeguarding Children Partnerships (LSCPs).
  • Liaise with the Head of Boarding to ensure that the school is compliant with the National Minimum Standards for Boarding.
  • Effectively liaise with the DSL from the Prep School to ensure congruence with procedures and help to engender a 'whole school' approach.
  • Work closely with the Heads of Year, Pastoral Support Workers and Medical Centre to ensure that there is a joinedup approach.
  • Work with the Attendance Officer to ensure the correct dissemination of information and correct follow up.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of online safety policies for safeguarding purposes.
  • Have full oversight of all incoming concerns, and subsequent investigations and risk management, ensuring all action is recorded as required.
  • Work with the Admissions department regarding entries to the school around safeguarding concerns. This also involves liaising with future schools and the proper transfer of safeguarding information.
  • Escalate incidents to the local authority as necessary contacting CADS, the Police, and LADO when required.
  • Undertake investigations into allegations made against staff, as instructed by the Headmaster, attending LADO and MALM meetings accordingly.
  • Lead the safeguarding meeting and ensure the training for all members of the safeguarding team is kept up to date and compliant (DSL update training every two years and one Multi-Agency Training course every three years).
  • Attend the weekly pastoral forum meetings to ensure congruence with the pastoral teams.
  • Ensure the implementation and the regular updating of safeguarding training for all staff and monitor the impact of the training provided.
  • Ensure that any information about specific children is sensitively disseminated to the relevant staff and strategies put in place to support that child and staff concerned.
  • Support the ongoing professional development of all staff, particularly the Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL) and Senior Leaders, within the school in relation to safeguarding and wellbeing.
  • Develop, deliver and embed training materials and systems that ensure all staff know how to use CPOMS and how to raise a safeguarding concern.
  • Develop and deliver safeguarding quality assurance activities including undertaking annual safeguarding audits, SCR audits and record reviews, identifying improvement priorities and remedial actions.
  • Develop and embed training and systems that ensure all staff working in safeguarding and pupil wellbeing have access to appropriate supervision.
  • Provide challenge and updates to the leadership team at the weekly SMT meeting.
  • Collate information on safeguarding incidents weekly and analyse trends, produce reports in order to check for compliance in the handling of them, but also to recommend improvements to the SMT.
  • Ensure CPOMS is used effectively to facilitate good safeguarding practices.
  • Maintain and report on safeguarding compliance and concerns to the Governors on a termly basis.
