Description

The Science and Laboratory function of the GU will lead on all scientific and laboratory aspects assigned to this team.

The team provide expertise to help to prepare the NHS to harness the power of genomic technology and science to successfully embed the NHS GMS into the NHS.


The Cancer Scientific Advisor will give focus to the haematology malignancies workstream, assigned to the Science and Laboratory function of the GU and will deliver an effective service to support the embedding and ongoing development of the NHS GMS.

The post holder will also Lead on the transformational agenda for supporting the National Genomic Test Directory for haematology malignancies, and sample collection and processing across the NHS.


  • Be responsible for the cancer scientific work, particularly with regards to the haematology malignancies, assigned to the Science and Laboratory function of the GU and will deliver an effective service to support the embedding and ongoing development of the NHS GMS;
  • Lead on the transformational agenda for supporting the National Genomic Test Directory for haematology malignancies, and sample collection and processing across the NHS;
  • Ensure that all blood and tumour samples from patients are processed according to the NHS England approved Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and performed by staff with appropriate training who receive regular competency checking in these procedures;
  • Work with a wide range of stakeholders in the NHS GMS and other members of the GU to lead discussions on operational issues regarding sample processing, quality assurance, education and research support for healthcare professionals;
  • Provide timely written and verbal reports on key issues and respond to daytoday queries from all areas of the NHS GMS to drive improvements and ultimately improve success rates through optimising procedures;
  • Work with each of the NHS GLHs to ensure that plans for sample processing, testing and reporting are in line with established protocols and that the requisite approvals and accreditations are in place;
