Microalgae Production Specialist

  • Location: Vale Nickel Refinery, Clydach, Swansea (initially)
  • Hours: 40h/week Contract
  • Type: Full time Salary: £ dependent on experience

About the Role
Remediiate's mission is to culture microalgae to abate CO2 and produce valuable biomass.

We utilise advanced technology in processing flu gases to provide a carbon dioxide (CO2) feed for microalgae in its state-of-the-art photobioreactor system.


Remediiate's team has global experience of a range of industries and is highly multidisciplinary, with its technical experts working across biology, bio photonics, chemistry, electronics, and engineering.

Remediiate is immerged in a large new project which will entail developing some of the largest and most advanced microalgal processes in the world, to support with delivery of this work Remediiate is looking to expand it fast past expert team with, enthusiastic early career scientists to support with the development and operation of its new plant.


Reporting:

Reporting to the Microalgae Production Manager

Dotted line responsibility to the CBO and CTO to manage the junior microbiologist team members.

Dotted line responsibility to the site manager (for all H&S related issues)


Work Environment:
This role is based at Remediiate's field site Clydach, Swansea.

The work conducted by Remediiate's science team is truly multidisciplinary giving the opportunity to be involved in all areas of the company's technology requiring its science team to develop diverse in skills and work at a range of scales.

A typical working week will be based around Remediiate's field site just outside Swansea and will involve a diverse range of activities including but not limited to:


  • Working in the field lab, culturing, maintaining and monitoring microalgal cultures.
  • Operating, maintaining, and collecting samples from the largescale demonstration system
  • Interacting and working with Remediiate's partners at Swansea University
  • Supporting with the design and development of future systems

Hours worked:


Production Scientist work mostly fits into office hours but will occasionally need to be flexed to work outside office hours.

Work on some weekends is expected, with the aim to minimise it and distribute it among the staff.


Travel:

Travel will be required to other Remediiate sites as required.


General Responsibilities will include:


  • Perform day to day activities of the Rii field sites lab.
  • Maintaining Remediiate's microalgal cultures
  • Scaling of microalgal cultures for Remediiate's large scale reactor
  • Prepare cultures' operations: Inoculation, harvesting, cleansing.
  • Monitor cultures to ensure status within appropriate parameters.
  • Analyse cultures, media and downstream products.
  • Contributing to experimental design and setup
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Keeping consistent records of progress and results
  • Coordinate with external laboratories for potential analyses.
  • Contribute to the development and review of Standard Operating Procedures.

Education, Training & Qualifications:


  • Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry or similar background with experience in Phycology, Phytoplankton, Aquaculture or related essential.
  • Experience conducting independent laboratory research desirable.
  • Experience and knowledge of designing experiments and statistical analysis of data essential.
  • Basic IT (MS Office) desirable.
  • Analytical skills (Benchtop sampling) essential
  • Experience operating bioreactors, photobioreactors, pilot plants desirable.
  • Experience and knowledge of microalgae and cyanobacteria biology desirable.
  • Experience of field work and working on industrial sites desirable.
  • Ability to prioritise and multitask essential.
  • Work independently and within a team essential.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and present findings (written and oral) essential.
  • Full UK Driving licence.
