We're looking for a kind, compassionate and resilient Specialist Support Worker to join our Mental Health service in Newham, for a Fixed Term of 9 months.

The Newham Mental Health Team is based at Flying Angel and supports customers in the building but also in the community.

The service operates Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm, with customers who have low to medium support needs. We work in partnership with other professionals to support our customers who have multiple complex needs. The service works as a team, but we expect staff to manage their own caseload.

The service provides Housing Related Support hours which is on a spot purchase basis, so the support hours can vary from customer to customer and staff are expected to participate in a wide variety of activities to help customers learn to live more independent lives and develop skills for life.


The service we offer is to provide a safe, stable and supportive environment to enable customers to live with privacy, dignity and equality of opportunity.

The service aims to reflect the needs and aspirations of people with Mental Health.

This will be achieved through the active and regular involvement of customers and relevant agencies in determining what services are offered and how these are delivered, in line with valuing them.

To provide individually tailored packages of support, which recognise diversity, acknowledge, and respect previous life choices and experiences.

The Specialist Support Worker will be part of a team that operates Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

They will provide support to customers with complex mental health needs.

This may include those with needs relating to a history of alcohol and drug use, complex trauma issues, a history of non-engagement, a connection with criminal justice services and/or a personality disorder in addition to their mental health related needs.

Specialist Support Workers will provide support to enable customers to develop the skills they need to live independent lives.

Post holders will carry a caseload of customers, working as part of a team to determine effective, recovery orientated support and risk management plans.

Specialist Support Workers will work flexibly to provide support at a time and place that promotes high levels of customer engagement.

This will include providing support with the physical, domestic, emotional, and social needs of the customers of the service. They will work with customers to manage their tenancies and live independent lives in the community.


Specialist Support Workers within Look Ahead are required to have either an extra dimension of experience or a higher qualification level as determined relevant for the particular post.

Specialist Support Workers provide information, social inclusion, and vocational opportunities to support people to recover and stay well; exercise choice and control in their care and lives; and participate on an equal footing in the community.

Support is also provided to develop a model of re-enablement towards self-advocacy, self-management, and empowerment, incorporating the principles and practice of recovery, co-production and peer support.
