To support underwriters (as trusted adviser) in the execution of their strategic deliverables and enhancing their product proposition by providing legal, regulatory and product development expertise.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support innovation and growth in the business as well as managing legal & regulatory risk
  • To assist the Head of Wordings promote and develop EO Wordings as a valuable resource, developing and supporting team strategy and plans.
  • To support relevant underwriting portfolio(s), in line with EO Wordings team strategy, contributing to portfolio strategic and business planning as relevant, and supporting the business to deliver its plans via product support and client interaction
  • Review broker produced and/or other policy wordings, identify exposures and negotiate direct with external professionals or make informed recommendations to underwriters
  • Develop and manage relationships with external professionals (e.g. brokers and legal advisers) to support the above
  • To support development and delivery of new processes and products that seek to improve efficiency and profitability
  • Support and lead on accurate, timely and relevant service delivery to underwriters
  • To propose and support EO Legal and Regulatory and Wordings Team initiatives which provide practical support to the business
  • Liaise, as required, directly with underwriters, brokers, policyholders and other clients at a senior level and maintain strong relationships with these stakeholders.
  • Attend and participate regularly in underwriter team meetings as well as EO Wordings team meetings.
  • Ensure stakeholders expectations are managed with "no surprises" culture adhered to
  • Collaborate with other disciplines within EO Legal & Regulatory and Underwriting Governance teams to support professional development and information sharing
  • Put conduct risk at the heart of product proposition
  • Share legal, regulatory and commercial developments with EO Legal & Regulatory and develop and share appropriate responses to same
  • Leads at all times with putting the product and customer at the heart of our proposition
  • Recognized as an expert in relevant disciplines with up to date knowledge of insurance law (England and Wales), and UK regulatory requirements as they affect documentation and commercial issues
  • Continuously review opportunities and contribute to plans for product development and density
  • Strong drafting skills with ability to negotiate and draft competitive documentation for lead markets in line with legal and regulatory requirements and consistent with EO and commercial philosophy
  • Provide credible support to the business when meeting clients and negotiating with brokers
  • Observes the EO Legal and Regulatory team charter and leads by example
  • Supports the Head of Wordings in motivating and developing the team members to the required standards of performance and is involved in supporting the continuing personal and professional development of team members
  • Increases team capability and quality of output by sharing knowledge and best practice
  • Actively encourages feedback and celebrates success

Preferred Experience

  • Common sense approach to resolution of problems
  • Resource and budget management/planning
  • Successful face to face dealings at a senior level with commercial clients, stakeholders and brokers
  • Underwriting or equivalent commercial experience preferred
  • Typically five years in a respected transactional insurance practice or equivalent in insurance litigation
Preferred Knowledge

  • English law practicing certificate
  • ACII preferred
  • Excellent technical understanding of insurance regulation and market practice
  • Extensive technical insurance knowledge in selected lines
  • Sound knowledge of office products
  • Sound knowledge of MS Office products
  • Competent understanding of the law of tort and contract as relates to policy drafting
