Position:
Phlebotomist


This role is based across two of the four practices within the North Bournemouth Primary Care Network, The Village Surgery and Banks and Bearwood Medical Centre.

Hours:


  • Tuesday: 13:30 to 17:30 (Bearwood Surgery)
  • Wednesday: 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30 (Village Surgery)
  • Thursday: 13:30 to 17:30 (Bearwood Surgery)
  • Friday: 08:30 to 14:00 (Village Surgery)


Working under the direction of the on site lead nurse and as part of the Network multidisciplinary teams, the post-holder will be responsible for performing venepuncture, as requested by the clinical team, to the entitled patient population across 4 GP Practices (and branches).

In addition, the post holder will be expected to support the nursing team on an as required basis.


Primary Responsibilities:

The following are the core responsibilities of the phlebotomist.

There may be on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks; this will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

a. Obtaining patient consent for the collection of a blood sample

b. Performing venepuncture in accordance with practice protocols

c. Maintaining accurate patient records on TPP Systemone

d. The correct labelling, packaging and storing of samples

e. Effective use of the specimen log, resolving any discrepancies

f. Ensuring samples are sent to the laboratory in a timely manner

g. Maintaining an effective liaison with the laboratory staff at Addenbrookes

h. Working collaboratively with the nursing team, seeking guidance when necessary for patient related matters.

i. Restocking of rooms at end of surgery.

Any other duties appropriate which may be requested.


Secondary Responsibilities:

In addition to the primary responsibilities, the nursing assistant may be requested to:
a. Participate in practice audit as directed by the aduit lead

b. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care

c. Support and participate in shared learning within the practice

d. Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota

Induction Training


On arrival at the employing practice all personnel are to complete a practice induction programme; this is managed by the Lead Nurse.
