About The Role


One of our Civil Engineering clients who deliver highways and street lighting maintenance are looking to recruit a Field Ecologist.

You will be involved in maintenance contracts, and a variety of large, complex, civil engineering projects across southernand central England.

As a Field Ecologist, you will primarily provide on-site ecological support for a range of highways infrastructure contracts/projects. You will deliver pragmatic ecological support which ensures compliance, drives improved ecological outcomes, and providestangible benefits to clients.


You will deliver ecological services such as habitat and species surveys, ECoW support, and assist with Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements.

You will be part of the ecology function within a wider in-house environmental consultancy team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertaking desktop studies and visiting sites to identify ecological constraints and opportunities.
  • Delivering habitat & protected species surveys and ECoW support.
  • Analysing and interpreting results from field surveys to provide practicable advice and guidance.
  • Preparing reports in a range of formats to clearly communicate findings and recommendations.
  • Supporting engagement with a range of stakeholders to increase awareness of ecological requirements and promote the ecology function.
  • Office and sitebased assistance with BNG assessments and subsequent mitigation / enhancement works.
  • Liaising with statutory regulators, consultees and stakeholders in relation to ecological constraints and opportunities.
  • Utilising and developing digital tools and technology to improve the efficiency of current methods and enhance capabilities.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience Requirements

  • 1 or 2 seasons of field survey or volunteering experience (desirable).
  • Advantageous to hold or be working towards a Protected Species Licence.
  • Working knowledge of GIS software (desirable).
  • Enthusiastic and selfmotivated approach, with a strong willingness to learn and develop.
  • Confidence to engage with a variety of internal and external teams and stakeholders and escalate issues when necessary.
  • Passionate about achieving better ecological outcomes in a challenging and fastpaced industry.
  • Ability to maintain a 'cando' attitude and manage conflicting priorities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel across the UK and stay away from home for short periods when required.
