The Role


This is an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant or Associate with strong quantitative and epidemiological research skills to join our newly-established NIHR Patient Safety Research Collaborative (PSRC), based in our School of Pharmacy.

You will work with experts in public health and epidemiology to undertake research in inequalities in patient safety behaviours. You should have an interest in inequalities in cancer and/or inequalities in multiple long-term conditions.

The role offers a unique opportunity to conduct impactful research with an inequalities focus, while developing a career in applied health and social care research.


The post is an appointment to the PSRC Theme "Reducing inequalities in patient safety behaviours and practices", which is led by Professor Linda Sharp and Professor Clare Bambra.

There are large health inequalities within the health and care systems in terms of safety, access and outcomes.

Adverse patient safety behaviours (e.g., late presentation, treatment non-compliance) are more common among people living in disadvantaged and marginalised communities.

Initial projects within the Theme will focus on improving understanding of health inequalities in timely access to cancer diagnostic services, treatment utilisation and outcomes.

You will have the opportunity to shape future projects and direction of the Theme.

This post is fixed term for a period of 5 years.

Key Accountabilities
Develop and carry out specified projects using appropriate techniques
Determine appropriate methodologies for research, with advice and support from Theme leads and others where required
Contribute ideas, including enhancements to the technical or methodological aspects of project(s), providing substantial 'added value'

Contribute, where appropriate, to the supervision of undergraduate and post
- graduate projects and dissertations and support other teaching activities (e.g. leading seminars)
Contribute, where appropriate, to the supervision of Research Assistants
Contribute to public and patient involvement/engagement (PPIE) activities for the Theme
Work in collaboration with, and support an integrated approach to, and engagement with, the PPIE leads for the PSRC
Develop effective working relationships with academics, clinicians, research staff and students involved in the Theme and PSRC
Participate in the activities of the Population Health Science Institute and other University research groupings as and where relevant
Develop an awareness of University structures, policies and procedures and relevant issues in the higher education, research, social and political environment

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Ability to work well as part of a team and rapidly acquire new skills
Several years health research experience, including significant experience of advanced statistical or epidemiological analysis of quantitative data
High level of analytical and problem-solving capability
Ability to communicate complex information with clarity and to encourage the commitment of others
Experience of research with clear transferable skills and some experience or awareness of the research environment
Track record (appropriate for career stage) of conference presentations, publications and other forms of dissemination
Experience and/or understanding of public and/or patient involvement and engagement in research
Desirable
Knowledge, training or experience in epidemiological methods
Experience of using Stata or R for data analysis
Experience of analysing "big data" (e.g. routine health service data, CPRD, UK Biobank)
Experience of systematic reviews, meta-analysis or other review methodolo
