Description

Do you want to help us improve human health and understand life on Earth? Make your mark by shaping the future to enable or deliver life-changing science to solve some of humanity's greatest challenges.

About the Role:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Staff Scientist to join the Parts Group on a permanent contract.

Our group joins the new Generative and Synthetic Genomics Programme, and remains linked to the Human Genetics Programme, creating an exciting environment for using engineering at scale to understand the human genome.

The role is designed for you to take co-ownership of a research direction; incept, develop and execute your own projects within the team remit; mentor junior lab members; and help troubleshoot technically demanding protocols.

You will be responsible for:

  • Creating and delivering new projects in understanding the function of human DNA.
  • Coordinating the implementation of related large scale projects in core pipelines with the help of our research specialists.
  • Analysing the generated data from your own projects as well as agreed lab projects
  • Writing publications
  • Supervising others in executing complex techniques, to help troubleshoot.
  • Mentoring junior lab members

About You:

You are excited about understanding the human genome - the function of its components, malleability of its output, dispensability of its regions, and the correct conceptual models for it.

You are familiar with the cutting edge of mammalian genome engineering technology, have enough bioinformatics experience to take initial looks at your own data, and have repeatedly demonstrated the ability to combine these skills and motivations to ask and answer interesting questions about the genome.

The potential of scaling genome engineering assays to create open foundational data resources aligns with your personal values for science.

About Us:

We are a mixed team of computational and wet-lab biologists (~50/50) striving to understand the human genome.

We test new tools, characterise them experimentally, model them computationally, and use the optimised versions with reagents predicted to do well to create large scale datasets uniquely possible at the core-funded Sanger Institute.

We work together on important problems, succeed as a team, and are excited about science.

Essential Skills:

  • PhD degree in a Molecular Biology or related field.
  • Evidence of good productivity through publications
  • Motivation to understand function of DNA in human cells
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Highly developed problemsolving skills
  • Excellent communication skills as evidenced by presentations.
  • Ability to prioritise tasks to ensure the right things are done at the right time.
  • Strong understanding of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and the ability to build collaborative relationships with multidisciplinary stakeholders from different backgrounds

Other Information:

Salary per annum:
£52,152-£62,224 (dependent upon skills and experience)
