The Adolescent Inpatient Service is a specialist Tier 4 inpatient service for adolescents with severe and complex mental health problems.

The postholder will be responsible for supporting qualified psychologists in the undertaking and delivery of a range of clinical and research based tasks.

There will be opportunities to co-facilitate a range of group therapy programmes, as well as providing support to qualified staff in the planning and development of clinical treatment.

There will be a key role in administering, analysing and feeding back on outcome measures on admission and on discharge, as well as at set intervals during a young person's admission to hospital.

The postholder may also be responsible for completing service level audit projects as part of quality and development initiatives. Responsibilities will also include liaison with allied professionals, contributing to the sharing of psychological knowledge and case discussion. Remaining time will comprise attending referrals meetings, participating in department forums and opportunities to shadow other team members. All work will take place under the direction and management of an experienced Clinical Psychologist. There will be a requirement to complete clinically related administration.

This job is patient facing with group and joint worker opportunities. The post holder can also undertake specific individual pieces of work under supervision eg assessments and psycheducation.

The post holder has a key role in developing and updating the young person's positive behaviour support plan.

They have a vital role in collecting and analysing data for a number of purposes.

They need to be able to work productively across the service with a range of different professionals.


The post holder needs to be able to build effective relationships with young people and understand working safely in an inpatient setting.

To assist in the development and facilitation of therapy groups as appropriate.


To assist in the formulation of care plans eg Positive Behaviour Support Plans involving the psychological treatment/ management of clients worked with, under the supervision of a qualified professional.


To undertake assessment, under supervision and as part of a wider psychological assessment, for individual client and to provide advice to other professions on the psychological aspects of assessment outcomes.

To monitor and evaluate progress during the course of clients' care and provide reports on this.

To provide clinical interventions on the Unit under supervision by a qualified Clinical Psychologist as appropriate.

To undertake joint work with other clinical staff as required by the care plan.

To attend and contribute to the MDT meetings and care plan reviews as appropriate.
