The Role


We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced academic to take a key senior research leadership role in the NIHR RSS Public Health Specialist Centre with national remit.

You will be responsible to the Director of the Centre and to the Centre stakeholders.

You will lead in the transition and development of the current NIHR pre-award research design service for public health (PHRADA) in the Centre.


The NIHR aims to increase the generation and use of public health research in non-NHS settings and has made substantial new investment of >£21 million in a National Institute for Health and Social Care Research (NIHR) Research Support Service (RSS) Public Health Specialist Centre with a national remit to support this.

The NIHR RSS Public Health Specialist Centre will be hosted in the Population Health Sciences Institute at Newcastle University along with the NIHR Research Support Service.

Three satellites will be established across England under the leadership of the NIHR RSS Public Health Specialist Centre.


The vision of our Public Health Specialist Centre is to develop the infrastructure, capacity and capability to support practitioners and researcher to carry out high quality public health research, outside the NHS, to produce robust evidence to improve population health and reduce health and care inequalities.

This post offers an exciting leadership opportunity to establish and lead a pre-award research design team within this new National Specialist Centre.


You will have direct line management of the pre-award research design team based in the RSS Public Health Specialist Centre at Newcastle and will be involved in the appointment of and work with the pre-award research design teams in the centre's satellites as they come on stream, as well as with the NIHR Research Support Service (RSS) and other NIHR infrastructure both regionally and nationally.

This is a full time role, fixed term until October 2028

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure the RSS Public Health Specialist Centre develops in accordance with its agreed objectives and that the NIHR contract is delivered successfully through collaborative working with the Centre Director and management team
  • Write and develop strategic and operational plans with direction from the Director and management teams
  • Establish new and develop existing links with the public health community regionally and nationally through Health Determinant Research Collaborations, Local Authorities and with the voluntary sector
  • Build the reputation of the RSS Public Health Specialist Centre and fulfil its objectives of increasing capacity for nonNHS public health research working closely with the Director and Design leads in satellite sites
  • Provide line management and mentorship to other members of the preaward research design team, regionally and nationally
  • Contribute to the management of public health research activities across Newcastle University
  • Deputise for the Director as required
The Research Design Lead (Principal Research Associate) will also contribute expertise to

  • Support investigators to define and refine their research question and aims and objectives, select an appropriate study design and advise on resources required and issues of feasibility and ethics
  • Lead and deliver promotional presentations as part of the NIHR Public Health Research programme webinars and RSS Public Health Specialist Centre events
  • Work with the wider RSS Public Health Specialist Centre team to develop and promote the Centre and funding opportunities including to a wider interdisciplinary audience
  • Undertake appropriate continuing professional development to maintain awareness of methodological developments and to share knowledge and expertise with the wider RSS Public Health Specialist Centre and RSS teams
This is a senior research appointment, as such and as time and capacity allows the Research Design Lead (Principal Research Associate) will be expected to develop their own research and contribute to teaching or student supervision


This would include:

  • Working independently, taking the lead on developing and submitting research proposals to external funders and ensuring research projects are delivered successfully
  • Publishing research findings regularly in high quality, international and national academic journals and disseminate research findings appropriately to other audiences
  • Supervision of postgraduate students with opportunity to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and marking
