What is a Students Union?
Great question.

A Student Union is a student-led organisation whose main purpose is to represent the best interests of all students on the issues they may face.

A Student Union is independent of the University and many (including us) are affiliated with the National Union of Students (NUS).

Student Unions are mostly led by elected students, who are typically current or recently graduated students from the University they represent.

Many Student Unions are largely financially supported by the university and most (including us) also raise money by running commercial services such as bars, cafes, and shops.

What does the Information and Advice Service (IAS) do?

The IAS sits within Nottingham Trent Students Union (NTSU) and offers free advice and representation to all NTU students on a range of matters including those relating to housing, academic, and wellbeing.

This part of the service is reactive, but the role which is advertised sits within the proactive/preventive side of the service.

The aim of the proactive arm of the service is to conduct outreach events using student volunteers to engage with their peers and to educate them on the support that is available if they are struggling as well as to raise awareness of the common issues students face and how they can avoid these.

Our Information and Advice Service here at Nottingham Trent Students Union (NTSU) is a sector-leading service with high student satisfaction rates and a talented and high-performing team.

What's the job?
We are looking to appoint a self-motivated Advice and Support Coordinator who is passionate about supporting students.

The role will require you to lead the student volunteers within the IAS whilst supporting the advice team by triaging and providing basic advice to students.

You will lead the student volunteers within our Peer Support Scheme, a scheme which focuses on students supporting and empowering other students who are experiencing discrimination, harassment, and bullying, during their studies.

These student volunteers will be able to share their experiences and provide a safe space where they can empower and support students facing difficulties to know that there is support available to them and that their feelings are validated.

A key part of your role will be to recruit and train student volunteers to not only support their peers but also raise awareness of the service through engaging activities and events so as many students as possible can benefit from the support available to them whilst at university.

Another key aspect of the role is departmental support for student officers.

What this looks like will vary, but likely responsibilities include, supporting policy and campaign work and being involved in officer project teams, including potentially as project manager.

The IAS also sits within our Membership Services Department, which includes the Voice, Opportunities, and Comms Teams. The job, therefore, entails working closely with and supporting colleagues across the department, as well as across the organisation.

What are we looking for?

Within the IAS, we are committed to placing Diversity and Inclusion at the heart of everything we do, so we're not looking for someone who will fit into our culture - we'd love you to add to it.

We want you to help us think differently.

We believe that if everyone can bring their own unique experience and background then, together, we can spark better solutions for our student members, colleagues and the environment.

What can we offer you?

As you'd expect from a Students Union a salary is just the start We offer a whole host of benefits to suit your lifestyle and support your wellbeing including a great pension scheme, flexible working to enable you to strike the balance between work and your personal life, an eye test voucher scheme, life assurance cover and so much more.

It goes without saying that within the IAS we want all colleagues to feel valuable and valued and we will start to do this by ensuring that the work that you are doing is meaningful and helpful to our members and secondly that you are doing this in an environment where you feel included, welcome and, dare we say it - at home.

You can join one or more of the many colleague-led staff networks at the University which are designed to help all staff find their own community whilst at work.

They are a supportive environment where all can thrive and feel supported
- while also challenging others to think differently. NTU have many such networks which you are able to join including the REACH (Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage), Women's Network, LGBQ+ Network, and Disabled Employee Network to name a few.

We are committed to sustainability within the IAS and in addition to excellent
