This postholder will work across UCLH's general haematology outpatient service, SIHMDS and red cell inpatient services, working with colleagues in clinical and laboratory haematology at UCLH, as well as a number of partners at other organisations.


The general haematology diagnostic service is currently undergoing service transformation and this is a great opportunity for the postholder to be involved in shaping the future of the service and transforming and improving patient pathways.

We are looking for a dynamic individual who can lead on initiatives such as straight to test pathways, our advice and guidance service, engagement with primary care and use of data analytics to improve our service offer.


The successful applicant will be expected to join the general haematology diagnostic service at UCLH and help to drive and develop this growing and important service.

The applicant will join one of the two weekly diagnostic clinics, in addition to which there is an advice and guidance service for local GPs (delivered by ST3+ trainees and overseen by SIHMDS consultants), with a separate system for giving general haematology advice within the Trust.

The scope of the service is widening and the post-holder would be encouraged to review this and make recommendations for potential development.

The applicant will join the SIHMDS team delivering laboratory diagnostics two sessions per week.


The applicant will also join the red cell service at UCLH to manage the inpatient care of patients with red cell disorders at UCLH.

The role will involve one adult diagnostic haematology clinics per week and potentially an additional specialty clinic. The appointee will be expected to attend the red cell MDT when attending.

Attending and on call will be for the red cell service at UCLH only. This will involve care of inpatients with red cell disorders.

Out of hours on call will involve care of patients with red cell disorders and may also involve out-of-hour transfusion cover, where the issue is not major haemorrhage or coagulopathy.

The primary commitment will be undertaking clinical duties, supporting and developing the general haematology diagnostic service at UCLH and the SIHMDS and joining the red cell service to deliver inpatient care.

Participation in regional and national meetings is important with the aim of developing a national profile.

Clinical work will be outpatient-centred in the UCH Macmillan Cancer Centre and involve inpatient attending on a rotational basis. Active participation in MDTs, audit and research is required.


The post-holder will be expected to take part both in the teaching of medical undergraduates and the supervision and training of junior doctors.
