Control Systems Test Room Inspector

Salary - £62,079 p/a

Location - Covent Garden with expectation to travel across LU network

LU - Permanent (P6A1)

Overview of project/role


London Underground is one of the world's most famous metro systems and is responsible for more than 5 million passenger journeys a day.

It has 11 lines covering 402km and serving 272 stations. During peak hours, more than 500 trains are in operation.


You will also be responsible for ensuring that all activities are undertaken in compliance with the relevant legislation, Standards and within a safe system of work.

The Control Systems equipment, including Remote Terminal Units, HMIs, Network Equipment and intelligent electrical devices, form an essential and critical part of the power network and thus the operation of the railway system.

The role requires effective, collaborative work as part of the wider team involved in the maintenance, operating, servicing and repair of Power distribution equipment.

Key Accountabilities

  • Manage and undertake the maintenance, repair, and operation of all London Underground Control Systems assets, intelligent devices and auxiliary equipment
  • Responsibility for all Control System devices, plant control schemes and measuring devices on site, including electromechanical, electronic and microprocessorbased instruments.
  • Understanding of a wide range of industrial communication protocols, including IEC61850 and IEC60870.
  • Assist in the commissioning of Control Systems and Intelligent Devices, acceptance testing of new and transposed equipment, decommissioning, modification, and additions to existing systems.
  • Maintenance and testing of Communication network assets
  • Checking and updating of schematic drawings/schedules pertaining to Control Systems equipment and intelligent devices.
  • Application of test voltages and currents to plant and equipment.
  • Investigate and rectify reported faults on Control Systems equipment and intelligent devices. Prepare reports which detail the corrective action taken and necessary recommendations.
  • The interrogation, retrieval, and analysis, as well as switching, monitoring and fault logs from intelligent devices.
  • The installation and use of specialised monitoring equipment for the purposes of fault investigations, power quality, harmonic studies to assist LU as required.
  • To ensure all documentation associated with tasks is completed to a defined satisfactory standard.
  • Isolating and making safe of low voltage electrical equipment for the purpose of carrying out work.

Skills

  • Safety Critical Certified (Training Provided) (Essential)
  • Fully PC Literate (Essential)
  • Holder of an LU LV1 license (Desirable)
  • Full UK driving Licence (Essential)
  • Flexible approach to work, selfreliant (Essential)
  • Ability to fault find to component level, discrete electronic printed circuit boards (Desirable)
  • Good communication & report writing skills (Essential)
  • Ability to plan, organise and prioritise work to meet specified deadlines and targets under pressure (Essential)
  • Ability to supervise and work in a team (Essential)
  • Demonstrate a proactive approach to new technology and learn new skills (Essential)

Knowledge

  • Sound theoretical electrical knowledge of dc batteries and chargers, standby power supplies three phase ac electrical supplies, transformer principles, ac & dc switchgear operation and the fundamentals of circuit protection and earthing arrangements. (Desirable)
  • HNC/HND in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Equivalent (Essential)
  • Working knowledge of MS Office packages e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Knowledge of Electrical and Electronic systems (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of networking and network components (Desirable)

Experience

  • Experience of working on Control System equipment, be able to read electrical schematic diagrams, and follow schedules. (Desirable)
  • Experience of working on network equipment, including (but not limited to) routers, hubs, and network switches and their configurations. (Desirable)
  • Experience working with copper and fibre optic communications mediums on an industrial level (Desirable)
