Overview:
To work within the Islington Youth Justice, I-Can, Targeted Youth (TYS) and Youth Progressions services, to provide intensive and aspirational employment support to young people who are engaged in / at risk of engaging in criminal activity


NB:

this role is focussed on supporting a 50/50 caseload; approximately half of the caseload supported will be aged 16-18 and open to Islington Youth Justice Service (YJS)/ I-Can/ TYS, and the other half will be former YJS service users aged 18-25, who opt to remain engaged, and are able to access support via the Islington Youth Employability and Skills (YES) Programme.


Use a personalised and holistic one-to-one mentoring and coaching approach to engage vulnerable children and young people with a programme of bespoke support, work experience and skills activities help prepare them to access and gain suitable jobs including apprenticeships.

To work with colleagues across the Inclusive Economy and Jobs services to identify appropriate employment and work experience opportunities for young offenders.


To support the wider work of the service in improving outcomes for vulnerable groups and residents who face additional barriers to employment.


Responsibilities:


  • To organise and manage a caseload of children and young adults ensuring they are seen as needed, using a personalised, holistic job coaching and mentoring approach to support them in their journey to employment.
  • To focus on building confidence and selfesteem and working with children and young people's strengths and to incorporate this as part of their ways of working.
  • To be tenacious and determined in supporting clients to achieve their goals and supporting them along the way.
  • To work in a community based, peripatetic way, engaging with young people at a range of outreach locations according to local and individual need.
  • To assess barriers and skills levels of young people, and identify appropriate pathways that will support their progression towards employment.
  • To undertake effective assessment with children and young people through the agreed processes, to establish priorities and aims with each individual. Implement guidance and brokerage skills to meet the agreed priorities and aims.
  • To understand the underlying issues and challenges faced by children and young people, and work in a trauma informed way to support them with these matters, and identify and signpost to relevant specialist and support services.
  • To build relationships and work proactively with key stakeholders including members of the YJS, TYS and I-Can services, promoting the employment offer and sharing information and good practise around supporting children and young people not in education, employment or training (NEET), to become aware of the opportunities the council and local employers provide.
  • To develop a meaningful action plan with young people to determine job goals and progress towards the labour market, using coaching methods to empower the young person to take control of their own development and achievements, successfully market themselves to employers and to source jobs, giving them the skills they need to become selfsufficient and less dependent on support services.
  • To develop a good understanding of the local labour market and develop the relevant relationships to be able to refer young people, where relevant, to a bespoke programme of opportunities which can consist of functional skills delivery, therapeutic and specialist support services and preemployment and work experience opportunities to help them build up their skills and prepare for work.
  • To build and maintain relationships with other services within the Council and wider borough, i.e. specialist agencies, including targeted and specialist services and the voluntary sector, to reach and work with young people with particular vulnerabilities on your caseload and ensure that information and data is shared and work allocated efficiently.
  • To use a variety of job searching methods, including accessing the hidden job market and working with employer engagement colleaguesand wider service, to source suitable jobs or work related activities for the individual.
  • To ensure that records are kept up to date in line with service guidance. To record all activities on the YJS service database (ChildView), IYSS and any other monitoring system as required. To ensure all data captured is accurate, on time and fulfils the needs of the wider services in terms of quality and outcome monitoring.
  • To work as part of a team, encouraging a learning environment and sharing best practice.
  • Work closely with colleagues across the Youth Progressions Service and iWork services, to ensure a coordinated approach to supporting young people, and relevant information shared.
