York Health Economics Consortium (YHEC) is a health economic consulting company formed in 1986 and wholly owned by the University of York.

YHEC is the University of York's main consultancy provider of health economics expertise.


YHEC has over 60 members of staff and our purpose is to provide national and international consultancy and research in health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) to the NHS and the pharmaceutical and health care industries (read more about our work with NICE).

YHEC's service combines rigorous research standards with efficient project delivery.


YHEC also carries out work for a range of national and international clients outside the health sector, including local authorities and the voluntary sector.

YHEC's healthcare consultancy staff includes economists, supported by other analytical disciplines necessary to respond to clients' needs. YHEC is part of one of the largest and most active group of HEOR research departments in the world. It is, therefore, able to draw on the specific expertise of staff in related academic departments.

Main Purpose of the Job
The research consultant - medical writer will undertake and supervise high-quality writing activities in YHEC.

This will include a broad range of medical writing projects and will involve the planning, writing, and editing of project reports, journal articles, slide decks, digital media, and submissions to NICE and other HTA bodies.

You will be contributing to a wide range of client projects in the HEOR or RES team.


Main Duties
The research consultant -medical writer will contribute to the performance and profitability of YHEC Ltd in the following areas:

  • Lead the development of a range of written deliverables, for example large dossiers (HTA and core value), protocols, technical modelling or review reports, and slide decks.
  • Prepare manuscripts directly from modelling or review reports.
  • Lead payer engagement calls and interviews with key opinion leaders.
  • Contribute to the intellectual design and planning of projects.
  • Undertake or contribute to project management duties such as project planning and client liaison.
  • Meet project deadlines in a timely manner.
  • Contribute to the development of research proposals, and lead discussions with potential clients around scope and defining the PICO.
  • Work with inhouse technical staff (e.g. health economists and systematic reviewers) as well as external associates to complete projects.
  • Conform to house styles and processes (including project tracking and timekeeping).
  • Manage inhouse training of research staff (primarily through editing of written material and delivering internal presentations).
  • Proofreading and editing of written material (own and others).

Personal Specification

  • Educated to degree level (in a scientific discipline or English language / linguistics).
  • Experience of working as a medical writer/editor or completion of a postgraduate research programme (applicants close to completion will also be considered).
  • Confidence in the design, management and delivery of complex writing projects for clients in the pharmaceutical and medical device industries.
  • Highly skilled with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and EndNote and competent user of Excel.
  • Excellent communication, organisational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proven experience in the preparation of technical reports, academic papers, research proposals and communication materials.
  • Knowledge of preparing manuscripts and conference abstracts/posters.
  • Willingness to engage in professional development, and enthusiasm to undertake reviewing or modelling tasks (with guidance from senior colleagues).
