The Meat Hygiene Inspector role is one of the key front-line operational roles within the FSS. You will deliver Official Controls in approved premises across Scotland, ensuring that meat produced is safe for human consumption.


The core work for the Meat Hygiene Inspector is the delivery of Official Controls for related to meat production in Red and White meat slaughterhouses and Game handling establishments (GHE's) within Scotland.

Full training to become a fully qualified Meat Hygiene Inspector is provided. The training includes both theoretical and practical training, you will then complete a written portfolio of evidence for assessment. This role is on

fixed term basis for the first 9 months. Upon successful completion of probation and required qualification, the staff will be moved into a permanent contract at B1 level (£28,702).

Responsibilities:


  • You will be expected to assist the Official Veterinarian in the delivery of Ante Mortem Inspection, Animal Welfare and Animal Identification.
  • Once qualified you will carry out postmortem inspection to determine if the carcases and offal presented are fit for human consumption, identifying and reporting uncommon conditions for further inspection.
  • You will be responsible for maintaining a record of postmortem inspections and findings, collecting and inputting data into relevant systems. You will be responsible for communicating the collected data along with any control issues to the Food Based Operator and primary producer.
  • You will need to be an effective communicator, working to establish and maintain effective working relationships with both Food Standards Scotland staff and the Food Based Operator team.
  • You will be expected to demonstrate hygiene best practice and comply with internal policies and procedures, monitoring HACCP as per plant procedure.
  • You will undertake duties fully in accordance with Food Standards Scotland Health & Safety Policy; report all accidents and potential hazards in accordance with FSS Health & Safety Policy to the OV and Operation Manager.

Must hold a valid driving license and own a private vehicle or be able to travel to work by other suitable means of transport.
