Main Purpose of Role:


Working with the internal Engagement Officer and other members of the Media, Communications and Events team, to deliver internal communications to students and staff, increase engagement and support the delivery of the University's strategic plan and vision.

The post-holder will need to have excellent writing and storytelling skills, innovative thinking and be digitally and technically savvy.

The post holder will also need to be able to advise at a senior level as this role involves close working with the Vice-Chancellor, Executive team and senior leaders across the University.


Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:


  • To work with the Head of Communications, Internal Engagement officer and other members of the Media, Communications and Events team to deliver internal communications strategic and campaigns to University staff and current students.
  • To work with the Executive team (particularly the COO), deans and key departments (including Student Journey, Estates and Facilities, Student Journey and the Students Union) to produce timely and effective communications on all corporate projects and activity including organizationalwide messages, performance and organizational change.
  • Support the Internal Communications Officer in the management and coordination of all internal communication platforms for staff and students including two intranet sites (US Online and About US); digital screens around campus; weekly newsletters; posters and other signage across campus.
  • Identify newsworthy content for multiple channels that increases engagement and supports business objectives ensuring content is of high quality and in the style and tone best suited to effectively reach the relevant audience.
  • Take responsibility for website content management systems and CRM systems, ensuring digital skills are kept up to date, in line with emerging technologies, and that new platforms and approaches are used appropriately.
  • Work creatively to increase internal engagement, including supporting the Internal Engagement Officer to trial new platforms and technologies.
  • Act as a point of entry into the internal communications team, monitoring the shared inbox and highlighting / escalating queries within the wider team as appropriate.
  • Use evaluation metrics to track input and reach of strategies and content.
  • Deputise for Internal Engagement Officer as required.
  • Support other projects across the wider team for example the delivery of corporate events or producing content for external audiences.

Special Circumstances:

May be required to work unsocial hours when required.


Essential

Qualifications and Professional Memberships:


  • Qualified to degree level and / or proven and relevant experience of working in the news media or internal communications

Knowledge and Experience:


  • Experience of successfully working on strategic internal communications and / or media relations
  • Good knowledge of news and current affairs
  • High level of media literacy including online content management, social media and evaluation tools
  • Project management skills
  • Experience of building relationships with a variety of stakeholders and partners
  • Understanding of strategic campaign models and experience and/or understanding of using insight and evaluation to achieve outcomes
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as a supportive member of a busy team
  • Attention to detail and the ability to manage and prioritise multiple projects
  • Energy, enthusiasm and resilience to pressure
  • Resourceful and flexible approach
  • Ability to work to deadlines

Desirable

Qualifications and Professional Memberships:


  • Educated to Degree level or equivalent
  • Relevant journalism or communications qualification
