Applications are invited for 2 part time (7 programmed activities each)

Consultant Neonatologists for our Local Neonatal Unit (LNU). These posts are substantive appointments, based predominantly at Watford General Hospital with some outpatient work at Hemel Hempstead Hospital.

Each post comprises of 7 programmed activities (PAs) which includes 1:
7 attending week and on-call commitment to Neonatal service.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a forward thinking and enthusiastic neonatal team. The successful applicant will join an existing team of 5 neonatal consultants. The Trust maternity services have about 4,000 deliveries per annum.

The neonatal service provides medical care for infants from 27 weeks' gestation; it has 2 intensive, 5 high dependency, 12 special care and 6 transitional care cots.

Neonatal unit is part of the East of England Operational Delivery Network with pathways for extreme preterm care to Luton and Dunstable Hospital, cardiac and surgical pathways to centres in London.

Neonatal unt admissions circa 900/year and 6000 care days across all care levels.


The Children Services of the Trust has a Paediatric Assessment Unit, Children's Emergency Department and Children's ward led by a team of 14 acute Consultant Paediatricians.

West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (WHTH) is the main provider of acute hospital services for around half a million people in South West Hertfordshire.

WHTH is one among the six trusts to receive funding via the National Health Infrastructure Plan (HIP One) and has a robust hospital redevelopment roadmap with new facilities set to open as early as 2026/2028.

These are substantive Consultant Neonatologist posts (7 Pas each) at the West Hertfordshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, currently based across Watford General and Hemel Hempstead Hospitals, with potential scope to include St Albans Hospital and community hubs.


Clinical Duties:


  • Improve the safety and quality of care for infants in our neonatal & perinatal services
  • Improve the training of the medical and nursing staff working and rotating through the neonatal unit at Watford Hospital, currently a local neonatal unit (level 2 unit)
  • Support the neonatal services in achieving BAPM quality standards
  • Improve parent and family experience in the neonatal unit in line with standards recommended in 'BAPM Neonatal Services Quality Standards' published in 201
  • Support the newly established Paediatric Assessment Unit.
  • To maintain Consultant emergency cover at current levels
  • Support clinical lead and other consultant colleagues in various activities related to Neonatal network, Local Maternity System (LMS) and Local Learning System (LMS)
  • Participate in clinical audit, quality improvement and service development initiatives
  • Support teaching and training within the neonatal unit


The consultant will share in the duties associated with the care of the patients and the running of the clinical department.

The consultants work as a team, and trainee staff are not specifically allocated to one consultant.
