We are looking for a highly motivated team member to join our Planning Policy team within the Planning & Building Control Service area.


Walsall is a regional town with a rich history and a bright future with potential to deliver significant development and investment projects and is working in collaboration with the West Midlands Combined Authority and other public partners to deliver regeneration projects.

Walsall Council has been awarded £11.4m from central government for the Future High Street Fund Programme to help deliver a Connected Gateway project to enable the delivery of two of the Town Centre Masterplan interventions; Transforming the Rail Station and Connected Hubs and Walsall and Bloxwich town areas stand to benefit from £21.3m each of Town Deal funding through the governments Towns Fund programme to deliver urban regeneration, green transport and economic growth outcomes.

Walsall has also secured £20m of Levelling Up Fund Round 2 (LUFR2) for Willenhall.

The development of Willenhall Garden City in Walsall will be accelerated by this grant, which will play a key role in unlocking a £210 million regeneration plan, enabling the delivery of new homes, parks, and a railway station.


The Site Allocation Document, Walsall Town Centre Area Action Plan and the emerging Walsall Local Plan seeks to deliver growth and regeneration through delivery of new housing, employment and infrastructure.

This is an exciting time to join Walsall as we embark on the preparation of a Walsall Local Plan.

You must be able to demonstrate relevant experience in planning policy and have excellent communication and customer service skills.

The role includes providing advice in respect of planning policy and guidance to customers, including Members, other staff and stakeholders, and to follow statutory procedures and local practice to achieve corporate objectives.


The role includes responsibility to review, monitor and prepare documents that form part of the Statutory Development Plan and other planning and regeneration related documents as required.

To undertake work on one or more planning policy specialisms and lead on creating planning policy and preparing and writing reports/briefs in order to represent the planning policy team at committee/cabinet, project steering group boards and other stakeholder groups.

Also to represent Walsall on planning policy issues at the national, regional and sub-regional levels, including developing comments on Government planning policy and contributing to representations on the development plans of other local authorities and development proposals in surrounding areas that would have implications for the Borough.

Support for the team and Planning Policy Manager at public inquiries/examinations including giving evidence as required. Presentation and written communications skills as well as organisational and IT skills are key to this role.
