We are looking for Clinical Fellow at ST3+ level to join our Paediatric department at The Great Western Hospital. The post is available for 1 year.

This is a full time post following the on call rota.


Shifts will include work on the Childrens Ward (including looking after those at HDU level), Neonatal Unit and Postnatal Ward/Delivery Suite, Paediatric Assessment Unit, and include reviewing some children in Emergency Department.

There is also the opportunity to run outpatient clinics under the support of the consultant.


We are a friendly and ambitious department, whose consultant and wider teams work closely together to ensure we are leading in patient care.

Close working with our Maternity team colleagues has allowed important neonatal innovations include development of standardised premature infant care pathways, leading to, among others, the nationally run Periprem project, neonatal simulation sessions and development of family-centred care.

More broadly, the paediatric department has established Learning from Excellence as part of its governance process, standardised assessment of the young person with self-harm to ensure holistic approach, and we ensure trainees and wider colleagues are involved and lead on exciting an interesting projects and cases.

Trainee feedback has been very positive with recent nomination of trainee environment of the year in South West PAFTAs.

The Duties outlined below are not definitive and may be changed in accordance with the needs of the service.


Clinical Duties:

To be part of the ST3+ Team (junior-grade) at the Great Western Hospital.

To provide in-patient services for children and infants

To participate in professional meetings for patient care

To participate in the Junior paediatric rota [including out of hours]

Participation in clinical audits.

To contribute to undergraduate/post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.

Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Participate actively in patient safety, morbidity and other professional/patient meetings

Participate actively in Child Safeguarding

Management and Leadership Responsibilities:


All staff in each Directorate are managerially accountable through their Lead Clinician and to the Associate Medical Director, who has overall responsibility for the services within the Directorate.

Clinical Fellow ST1-2 level doctors are key members of the Directorate team and are accountable and responsible for following the changes to service that will improve the patient experience set out by senior members of the team.


The post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Directorate including support to the Divisional Director to achieve their objectives.

Work in partnership with colleagues in other Directorates within the trust.


Work within the Trust's framework for Clinical Governance and Risk, including the development of clinical policies and adherence to standing orders, standing financial instructions and financial procedures.

Clinical Governance and Audit

Opportunities to participate in quality improvement projects and clinical governance presentations are encouraged.
